New Tank?

At my lfs I've been offered a 4ft tank (200 & something litres) complete with stand, hood, lights, heater (still with 12mnths warranty) & external canister filter (2yrs warranty) for $400Aus. It's 2nd hand but filter & heater r basically new. What do u think? I couldn't fit it in my house now but I could store it for when my partner & I move out. I'd plan on shifting my bgk in there plus discus fish.

I have no idea about your local price structures so I cannot say that is a good deal or not. In the US, a place where I do know prices, that would be very expensive. At about equal value of the US and Aussie dollar, I would expect a new tank that size to run about $150 US. The filter for a tank that size, brand new, would be about another $100 from an on-line source. The total, I am sad to say, would only be about $250 US brand new. A good quality, new in the box, heater would add about $20 on line or $30 at the local fish shop. Your $400 AUD sounds very high to me for a used tank. I would pay less than that for a new one.

He said I might be able to get her down but the filter itself retails for $190 odd & the heater is $80...both only new with warranties as stated. Maybe things are more expensive here because all that brand new I'd be looking at $1000 or more

Knowing how much my local pet shops (Australia as well) generally put on 4ft tanks with hoods and stands but no lights or filteration I would say your getting a pretty good deal. I would however try and weedle some new gravel and possible a nice piece of timber into the bargin. They may go for it, they may not but no harm in asking. Looking in the local handy trader booklet the going price for second hand tanks around your offered size are around the same price.

Just make sure if you do get the tank that you clean it throughly and ask the LFS if they had any problems with the tank, diseased fish, leaks or any other issues that might warrent them wanting to dispose of it.

Thanks baccus, they can get pretty pricey. I will definitely ask. The lfs doesn't normally deal with second hand tanks however the lady who currently owns it is good friends with her & she's just bought a few new tank setups from them so needs them gone. The guy was going to take photos for me. There's also a tank suitable as a marine setup (very tempting) for 900 but I certainly can't afford that.
