New Tank

You are correct SZatek. Boiling water raises the level of all contaminants by removing pure water and leaving behind the minerals.

Does this mean I am better just adding hot water from the tap to bring my water up to temperature for water changes then rather than boil the kettle?

Hi All,

Thanks for explanation. I just did my 12 Hr test and I noticed that although I added 7 ml of Ammonia yesterday it's already gone. Is it possible that I can drop from 4 ppm of Ammonia to zero in 12 hours now ? I will add about 3 ml of Ammonia after 12 hours to increase it and start building those N bacs. I forgot to mention I noticed small PH drop from 8.3 to 8.2. I hope it's not an indication of problems coming.

Best regards,

JoshuA,

Life taught me that. A bit of observation and you will definitely agree.
Or should I say: "la vie m'a appris que"

Best regards,

Szatek, I am sure I have read that it is quite common for the PH to drop a bit while cycling. I am kind of in the same boat as you at the moment. i.e. I add my ammonia and it is virtually gone after 12 hours. Although it worries me that this means there is no ammonia for the filter to work on for 12 hours, I was of the assumption that we are only meant to add it once per day. Hopefully someone will come along to clarify this.

That's exactly what I thought but maybe too much Nitrite will kill A Bacs. Don't know really :).

Just checked in another forum I follow and had it confirmed that you should only add once a day which is what I thought.

One add per day is plenty to keep making progress with the cycle. If you start adding twice a day you will build nitrites and nitrates faster but the cycle will not proceed at a faster pace.
Un fois par jour SVP.

Thanks OldMan47 (hate calling you that by the way!) I hoped someone would confirm this just to set my mind at rest.

Relax Maureen. My wife has called me old man since I was about 30. She is a few years younger than me and found it amusing. Now that I am truly an old man, I do not find it offensive at all. It gives me an identity in any place I go. I use that logon or simply Oldman almost anywhere I go. When I was at the American Livebearer Association in both 2009 and 2010 I even marked up my name tag to show the Oldman identity so that people there would know me by my on-line identity as well as the real name they had pre-printed on my name tag. I am proud of myself and Oldman is my recognized identity in many places. It gives me a real identity when dealing with other people who only know me as Oldman when they can put a real live face with the logon.
If you are uncomfortable using Oldman, try OM as so many others do.

Pourquoi sommes-nous à l'aide utiliser Google Translate de parler français?

Is it possible ? No Nitrite at all after 24 Hrs. :) My first double zero :).

A first of that type is indeed encouraging. Keep up the good work.
I have no idea who is using the Google translater, Meguro. perhaps you are. My own french is not that poor. Yes, I read it with some ease and don't need the translater. It is a bit more effort for me to compose new ideas in french but far from impossible.

Right. I'm almost getting double zeros now after 10 hours. Should I start adding more Ammonia to top it up to 4-5pmm ?

Best regards,

I added 7ml of Ammonia today to top it up to 4 ppm. Do my readings mean I'm in my qualifying week ? :)
