New Tank

Hi everyone. I have just been given a 35 litre tank. 2ft x 1ft. It currently has an under gravel filter and is very noisy. Im wanting to get a new filter/pump and dont have a clue what i shud b looking for and im not sure weather to go for another under gravel filter or weather to go for the other type. Can anyone offer me any advice on this.

Also the tank came with a parrot head and a plec already in it. But i dont want these fish. The plan for the new tank is to move my fish out of my smaller tank into the bigger tank and use the smaller tank for the fry i have recently found in my tank and also as a medical tank once the fry have grown. But the parrot head will eat my smaller fish like my neons and i have been told the plec is likely to hoover my cat fish up. Also I dont like the plec. It actually scares me. lol. Any ideas how i can get rid of these 2 fish.

The filters I've mentioned are call 'Internal Power Filters' or 'Internal Canister Filters'
I personally wouldn't recommend an under gravel filter.

As for the unwanted fish...do you mean a Parrot Cichlid?
That's crazy if someone put one in a 35l! It's also probably a bit crazy they put a plec in there aswell...

Anyhoo, you can try the classified section here. Or phone around your local fish shops and ask them if they will take the fish from you.

Firstly, regarding the filter. I think its a good choice replacing the undergravel filter, they are old technology and although do provide good filtration, they do require quite a lot of maintenance.

Ideally for your tank I'd go for something like the Fluval 1+ which is rated for tanks upto 45L and filters 200L per hour. You could even go to the Fluval 2+ but that would depend on your tank height whether or not the 2+ would fit in lol.

Regarding the plec, take it to your nearest store and see if they will take it off your hands. Alternatively, take a picture so people can identify it and advertise it in the classified section of this site.

Thanx for the advice on the filters. Yes it is a parrot Cichlid, and yes i thought it was too big for the tank. I think i wil b making some fone calls tomoz. lol. xxx

Thanx for the advice Andy. Im still very new to all of this, I wil have a look for a filter. And wil hopefully find a local fish shop that wil take the parrot and plec off my hands. xxx

Thanx for that. Yes im in the uk. Ive had a look. My tank is 15" tall so wud house the 2+. They are reasonably priced. Would u recomend getting the 2+ then rather than the 1+. xxx

It is always recommended to for the most filtration possible and for that tank a 2+ would work wonders, especially if you are only planning to use the tank for fry

If you are using it for fry, little tip, pop the bottom of a pair of tights around the intake to stop and little babies getting sucked up!

Thank you. Think Im going to move my other fish into the new tank and put my fry in the slightly smaller tank. But that is a brill idea and i wil do it which eva tank i use. My fry r currently in a goldfish bowl with water out of the tank. They are doing really well but i desperatly want to get new tank sorted so I can move them back into a proper tank.
