so i finally upgraded to 55 gallon today i got this package where the tank came with the filter heater and everything so i couldn't pass on it now the filter is an aqueon its huge compared to my little tetra whisper which is for a 20 gallon and the media is way bigger on the aqueon i have some questions

1. my 20 gallon tank is completely cycled but the media from the filter is tiny compared to the new filter which are 2 large cartridges will i still have a mini cycle as my 20 gallon have fish in it 7 corydoras 1 bolivian ram and 9 neon tetras i dont want to hurt any of my fish if a mini cycle does happen i am unsure and dont know what to do as im scratching my head i need help dont know what to do

2. are aqueon filters any good ?

Theyr not the best, but they get the job done. Also, when i upgraded tanks i took the old filter and used it in addition to the new one in my new, larger tank. This way, there is the nessecary filtering capacity to begin with, and plenty of room for more bacteria to grow. This does not work perfectly, however, and you will need to do large, perhaps bi-weekly water changes for a few weeks to be completely safe.

yeah i was thinking of running both filters i just dont want my fish...ive done some research on the aqueon and im getting mixed reviews some people say its great some people say it sucks i guess i might just have to try it out and see what happens im just scared my fish are gonna die to be honest

I have 2 aqueon filters and so far so good. My 29 gallon one is completely silent good cuz it's in my room. My ten gallon one is quiet but not silent. Very very quiet but I can hear it mire than my 29. They seem pretty good to me. I've read that they usually only last about 2-3 years though before they give out. Still good filterIMO.

did you cycle your tank because i have a whisper tetra for a 20 gallon tank and that tank is already cycled and i just bought a 55 gallon which i will be setting up on saturday i just wanted to know if i would get a mini cycle

when i ran an old and new filter i did experience a mini cycle, but it wasnt too dramatic

your media from the old tank has sufficiant bacteria to keep your fish safely. so putting ALL that media in the new filter WILL still have the same bacteria....
providing you add any extra fish it should be fine.

I have an aqueon 75/55 (90 gallon rated one) on my 75 gallon tank it keeps the water crystal clear and extreamly quiet compared to my marineland 350's and is way better then my fluval c4 was since it died the first power outage even with a #41#### surge protector..... I try to only change one cartridge in it at a time though as it does not have a media spot in it aside from little prongs on the water out flow similar to bioballs. It seems to work though as it is I am considering adding baskets of ceramic to the filter but have not decided yet

What I'm going to do is run both filters hopefully non of my fish will have any problems I won't be getting fish for awhile tho and then when thee other filter get acclimated I will add some fish slowly hopefully this works...any suggestions on this idea ?

Just move the media from the old filter to the new filter. DOn't take the new filter's media out, just cram the old stuff in alongside it. Problem solved, just don't add any new fish for a while.

Take some of the mature media from the 20 gallon - no more than 1/3. Cut it up if necessary, and put it into the new filter on the new tank. Then, add some ammonia and finish the cycle fishless from there. It will be fairly quick compared to a full fishless cycle from scratch. You will see nitrates building up rather quickly. I'd start with only about 2ppm ammonia and see if that clears in 24 hours. If it does, increase the dose to 3ppm. When that clears in 24 hours, increase the dose to 4ppm. Then when that clears continue dosing at 4ppm until it clears in 12 hours for a solid week. Water change and then add fish.

You will probably be completely setup quicker than you think. Mature media is AMAZING stuff! Use this time to research the fish you want to get for the new tank, setting up your decor the way you like without having to re-scape while fish are buzzing around. Take your time and give the new tank a little time to settle in. No sense in rushing.

Hang on, I thought you were moving all your existing fish to the new tank. if you're doing that, do what I said. If you're having fish in each tank, do what eaglesaquarium said
