Fish Crazy
Sand is definitely the way to go. I have never had a problem with sand getting in my filter in either of my tanks. I think it is easier to clean as the leftover food, fish waste, and dead pieces of plants can't fall through the holes the rocks/pebbles create. While it looks dirty faster it is well worth it. As Elise said corys will love sand. Mine constantly digs up my micro-sword and kicks around sand which I love to watch him do.
