Firemouths and convicts should be fine, but get two female convicts or just one single convict (of either sex) as when they're breeding they'll kick the crap out of the firemouths, maybe even kill 'em. And you cant get rid of the fry for love nor money anyway, apparently! We had two female convicts, then bought another thinking it was female, turned out to be a male - it paired off with one of the females within 24 hours, and the pair of them had my 8" oscar cowering in the corner. That was in a 6ft tank. Needless to say, he was returned to the LFS....

thanks to all who gave advice, i appreciate it, i will go with the convicts and firemouths, i will post some pictures when the tank has fish in it. thanks again.

If you plan on going with the 2 females, this will be important.
I found this info and figured you could put it to good use!

"Sexing Convicts is still relatively easy". "Females are usually a lot smaller than males, and will show orange/red markings on their bellies. This can range from small spots to an overall blush that can cover the entire belly. Males are generally much larger than females and will show long extensions on their dorsal and anal fins. Males will also sometimes show the orange markings on their belly just like females, but they are usually far smaller and much less prominent that on females. Females will also sometimes show the long fin extensions that males do, but this is fairly uncommon."

Hope this helps your decision at the LPS! Aslo, keep in mind that cichlids may not show signs of gender untill a certain age or state of maturity so these may end up tricking you as they did me a few times.....

Good Luck and keep us posted! I'd love to see pictures of the tank and the new fish!!!!
