hi i'm setting up another tankits 4ft by 18 inches by 12 inches, would it be ok to keep 2 oscars and 2 severum together in that the tank together, or would it be better to keep just the one type of fish, thanks for any replies.

i'll second that, 75 gallons is large but when dealing with oscars, possible 14 inches, it's best to have some room to work with. With your tank, you could have a great set-up for a oscar pair! or maybe you want to go with only the servums and try something in that direction....

It is more like 45 gallons so I would doubt 2 Oscars would be suitable as I'm sure they need at least 55gal for one so..... Not totally sure though so better advice would be needed, however the 45 gallons is right.

Wow! Good Call!!! my math gives me 44.88 ! I was simply going with the 1st post...... So 45 Gallons. That is a tad on the Small size for Oscars... any other ideas?

Your tank is roughly around 55 gallons not quit but close. I would rule out the ocars! I have a 55 gallon and my measurements are 49x18x13, like I said yours is close not quit. :good:

I am sure it is actually 45 gallons. Besides that, I am presuming it is 12" front to back. This isn't at all suitable for Oscars either given they can grow to 14" although 12 is more likely it still doesn't have much room to turn. Of course if you buy small ones and upgrade the tank before they reach adulthood, that is an option.

definately not big enough for oscars, however if that's your cup of tea you've room for a few nice NW cichlids in there, sevrum's, firemouths etc plus a plec :good:

could do a lovely set up with that tank

defenatley, why not some firemouths, they will grow 5-6inches. or maybe a JD. I believe they will grow 8-10inches......
hi scott would it be possible to have both firemouths and convicts in the same tank, and do they like hard or soft water, ive read a couple of books to get some info and they've given different info in different books, thanks willrob.

yup you can have them both together, providing the tank is big enough and they have they're own hiding places, any fish may get bullied if the cons decide to breed. water should be fairly neutral they don't want it too hard or soft.

yeah this should be fine, but it all depends on your tank set-up. as mentioned above, cichlids of all kinds like places to hide and claim to themselves. A good idea in these cases is rock caves and segmented parts of a tank by use of heavy decor. For instance, in one tank of mine i have the front section divided from the back section by way of caves, Both parts are equal in size and easily accessable for me and the fish, but the caves get in the way if a fish decides to chase another and provides a quick hideout for the one being chased. of course not everyone wants to take it to this level, so maybe having a few "heavier planted" or "rocky" parts would do the trick!
