aaronnorth, my comments weren't aimed at you specifically, which is why I didn't quote you, I was just making a general comment on the way advice is handed out and trying to point out that there is a big divide between the "experts" and the majority of tank owners in terms of effort, interest and enthusiasm. This is why "expert" advice doesn't always work in standard household tanks and it's all well and good saying use more light, more CO2, do more water changes but "in the real world" this advice goes in one ear and out the other. That's the way it is, sure there are certain things you have to do, ensure you have all the nutrients for instance but other advice can be implemented to different levels light, CO2 for instance.
It's not about the perfect way to run a tank for most owners, it's about what can I get away with and what will I be compromising by not doing certain things "perfectly". How do I fit this tank into my lifestyle because if it doesn't fit then no amount of advice is going to be much use. How do I run a tank on a budget along with a busy lifestyle for instance, there is little advise on this even though it applies to most tank owners but it can be done as long as you understand the consequences. It's just the advice for this type of tank is not always the same as an "expert" tank but most "experts" don't seem to appreciate this, and they probably don't care for people trying to do it either.
