Hello Im a new member

I have been sold a severum which I am told is a gold severum. I aren't sure though because it has black bars and I have never seen gold severums with black bars. It is around four inches long so quite young.

cna anybody help?

hmm interesting, I have never heard of a gold severum with black bars before.

If you can get a photo we will be able to identify him/her for you, as above, gold severums do not normally have black banding even when very stressed, so chances are it isnt a gold.

I was going to say stress, but if minx says not even then, then it could be something different,

however i did find this saying both have bands when younger

Hello

Thankyou for your responses. I have attached a photograph to show what I mean and hopefully it will help decide what it is. It is a poor phtoograph and please ignore the yellow water (tannins)

The picture doesn't really seem to do them justice, they aren't quite as faint as they appear in this photograph

I would stab at that gold being a cross not a pure gold with showing banding at 4". Probably a green x gold.

Still very pretty fish :D

Looks like a washed out green severum that might have the gold gene so it is more yellow then other greens. So the bars would show a bit.

That's my guess.

My guess is that its some slightly unusual mix of sevs. Pretty much all types of sev will breed with all the others happily, so any mix of strains is possible.

Gold x green probably, although as you say the bars in the photograph dont appear that bold, they will either increase or decrease with age. Either way its a nice looking sev :good:

how big to sev's get? i have got a 55G and some people say they will be ok, others don't...

Hi
Thought I would give an update. It seems to have grown already and never stops eating, still has the black bars. Although they are all fading all apart from the back one which seems to be darkening and thickening.
I'm also starting to worry slightly as it never stops feasting on the mossballs in the tank, most of them are more moss mats now . That isn't the worry though, the worry is that it's belly is becoming rather big. Almost dropsy looking territory!. It's so bad that I haven't fed them for 2 days and as much as it is pooping, it still isn't going down
