OK so firstly as an update on my frogs i have had them a month now and both are doing brilliantly  i even heard them sining to each other at 3am  last night and i suspect i may have a male and female (fingers crossed) i didn't think they were so loud! i still have to choose names for them and i'm open to ideas lol..i actually really like them  they were just the thing to get my intrest back in the hobby.
And on another note even though i promised myself NO MORE THAN 3 TANKS! i just had to rescue this little guy :( whilst at work i noticed not so long ago that we had just one lone newt left from a fire belly shipment ages ago, they took forever to sell and i doubt wether my bosses will get them in again any time soon. The newt was the only one left due to him escaping his tank and being found days later dry and dusty behind the quaranteen room door he was a really mess for a while as my bosses and tbh even myself had very little knowlage about them most of the batch died of fungus from being kept in waters that were hitting 30c! most fish would be a little uncomfortable at that heat! So any way i persuaded them to let me put him in on of the 40litre display tanks with 3 congo tetras and one lone random tetra ( i know it's awful and most of the newts were housed in the display untill they were sold). Anyway yesterday i couldn't stand it any longer so i brought him home he is temporarily in the divided betta tank untill i set him up a tank all to himself tonight he's painfully thin with ribs and hip bones showing..he is also not i fire belly newt on closer inspection and after a little research i have discovered he is a paddle tailed newt far larger and aggressive than the fire belly species good job he'll be living alone haha  His name is miricle ( i know cheesy right).

On another note i'm picking up my first axolotl on thursday!

Get him out of the betta tank. Fire bellied and paddle tailed newts need cold water and shouldn't be exposed to water above 20-22C for any length of time. Warm water (especially warm enough for a betta) can cause serious burns. As I'm sure you know, newts require plenty of space out of water which can be provided with a floating log or some rocks that come out of the water.

It's great that you rescued the newt :) I have five fire bellied newts that I rescued from my lfs (when I worked there) and they were in awful condition with missing limbs and really skinny. Now four of them are doing brilliantly and even the runt of the lot is eating and had regrown his limbs.

Oh dont worry he's being moved as we speak poor fella i got him for free at least i have the betta tank set at 20 from last night but now he's out i'm gradually raising it back up to 24-25. I read that paddle tail newts prefer to be totally aquatic on caudata i assume thats right? he has a floating log in his newt tank incase he does want to bask, i hear there enviroments are rather different to fire bellies despite there VERY similar appearance. My mum came round today and loves him haha . He's missing a finger on his front hand i assume that it wont bother him it doesn't seem to but iwonder if it will grow back? and whats the best way to feed the poor dear he's so thin but very very slow on the uptake i got him to eat a few bloodworms today and a little large krill the day before i know they can go weeks without food but still

Glad he's in cold water =)

Paddle tails are very aquatic but may want to get out of the water from time to time.

Finger should grow back with good care and clean water.

Feeding - sounds like you're doing OK. I just put loads of food in and they nom it. The little one is fussier and had to be tempted with tiny mealworms.

He seems to be perkier in the cooler water  he's in a 5 gallon with wood sand and floating log incase he wants to get out (got my boss to chuck the log in free) he used to spend alot of time on it which i think means the water was too hot in the shop as i suspected. I'll probably upgrade him to a 6.5 gallon long at some point once he's got alot bigger and stronger i am confident he'll only ever live alone..he's currently 5 inches and i heard they max out at 6 but he may have stopped growing due to his diet :grr:

i'll try some more food in the morning i have large krill, bloodworm, daphina, mussel all sorts of good meaty stuff to bulk him up fast  i think i'll train him to feed him of the water if possible to prevent water fouling and make weekly water changed and sand vacs less stressfull haha

Feed him in the water it'll be ok. People put food in jars and put the jars on the side so the food doesn't go everywhere. I personally use hamster bowls for the food; I just turkey baster it out :).

Newts are great :good:. One of mine recently saw me at the front of the tank and saw another one was getting attention; so she ran (on her back legs) arms waving around like mad to get to the front to see what was happening; it was sooo funny.

Mine do that ^^ I used to keep them in a tank on the floor but since moving them onto the side in the kitchen they've become attention whores!

hahahaha i love that... he pays attention when i put my finger up to the tank so i guess he's just getting used to me still but he's eating at least

Good to see more Newt converts around. Seriously underated pets - well done for the rescue!

Just an update miricle is doing brilliantly :D he's far more active and has gained weight so that his skeleton is no longer showing :good: He's merrily enjoying life in his tank to himself and i can see him living for many years to come, so glad i took a chance on the little man :)

congrats on miracle!!!

how are the frogs doing? i updated my breeding diary - - they laid and now i have tads :hyper:

have u sexed urs yet? send me a pic if you need help! maybe we can get urs breeding too :hey:

My firebelly newt LOVES live earthworms, and being paddletails are bigger they will gladly eat a whole earthworm. Try that and you will be shocked how quickly they will eat one.
