Apologies for the spelling of some these but I have just set up a new fully planted tank (allowed to settle down) with the following

4 Aphysemion Striatum (Cap)

2 Aphy Sporenbergei

2 Aphy Celia Winfredi

2 Aphy Reclognoese

& a chocolate lyretail that has been with me for months. (Cocoa- he's such a dear)

Have had them for a few weeks now & seem Ok but that I run a CO2 system to make sure my hard water is running at say 7 (rather that the 8.4 which comes out of my tap) & to ensure my plants are OK

They seem to lurk at the top of the tank which would appear to be they are needing oxygen, but thought they were soft water fish & therefore would need something to reduce the PH)

Would rather transfer the fish & let them be happy than ruin my plants, have a spare 30 gallon tank if needed

Ideas ??

Thank you

Yeah go ahead and transfer the fish, Sounds like you are getting pH swings throughout the 24 hour dayly cycle. I would seperate to the other tank using dividers and keep the species seperate.
Some nice killis there, I would also invest in a small Reverse Osmosis system.
pH and water hardness are two different things.
