New Guppies

Some of the pictures show a female heavy enough to be carrying fry. The one in the first picture looks to be only about a week from a drop.

Oh man! LOL I bought these to breed but thought that perhaps there was going to be a longer period of waiting until they got pregnant etc.

Thanks so much guys. Ok then at the moment they are all in togehter (the trio) on their own. Is it worth me keeping the female in her own space now? Plan to with lots of floating plants, just dont want to stress her out unduly by keeping her by herself?

Thanks so much xx

If you provide lots of fine leaved plants for cover and the trio is well fed, you will have plenty of survivors from each drop to quickly fill your tank with fry. Not all of the fry will make it but the number of survivors will be large. I keep a colony that breed freely in a 10 gallon and I sell a dozen or so from that tank every few months without ever seeing a reduction in the population. Whenever they look a bit crowded, I just scoop out 8 or 10 adults and sell them at a club auction.

Thanks very much for the wisdom Old man47, really appreciate. This batch will be exciting as will not know what the fathers colouration was. Here is hoping for my own pingu hybrids in the future :good:

I agree first pic, she's shaping up nicely, prepare for that drop in a week or so :good:

Thanks Harlequins :good: I have the female in her own divided section now and then the other female and male together, both pretty heavily planted and floating plants, so fingers crossed have an update soon :good:

LOL hope to have news soon. Wanted to check on something the female that I have separated in her own divider is pacing a little at the back of the tank, I have turned the lights off for the moment in hopes of calming her down, should I be worried??

nah u shouldnt be that worried.she may be getting ready to drop them. mine did the same thing. so i shut off the lights to and she calmed down. turning off the lights was a smart idea because she gives birth better in the dark.

thanks for that biokid101, I have had estimates of one to two weeks, so will keep an eye on her with out too much stressing. Was a little worried the water change had stressed her though did it extremely gently. So hopefully when there is a next update, it will be good news :good:

Just some updated piccys if anyone has further estimates and advice lol! Sorry on the dreadful quality!

im getting a vibe that perhaps the female in with the male needs to be by herself as she seems more pregnant? Useless me I know

you could put the females together and have the male separate for a bit if it makes you feel better...males harass females as they get closer to dropping in hopes of eating offspring sired by another male and being the first to mate with her to carry on "his" lineage

as for me I have 7 females for the one male in a very heavily planted tank - it gives him enough girls to divert his attention and i let the fry fend for themselves in the foliage:good:

I dont mind the male being there, but originally had plans to give the females a quiet spot when giving birth that was all. I think perhaps may put females together as that section is more heavily planted in all aspects and see what frylets I get out of it. OHHH its all this waiting and hoping they are pregnant and also when they will drop!

I know what you mean! All of my females are at different stages of pregnancy - every day I am constantly checking the females and lifting the lid to see the fry near the surface amongst the plants - they are sooo cute!
