Well i walked in to my Dobbies Garden world and the manager shouts over to me "we have some fish you will want", "we labelled them predatory so no one else would buy them"

so i scuttle over and peer into the tank to see 3 tiny little fish which he says are a Nandus of some species or a Leaf Fish...so without hesitation i said ill take all 3....so here is one of them..

I think ive ID'd them as Polycentrus Punctatus, but not 100% sure as they are still small and currently reside in a breeding net.

(All rites for these following 2 images be long to Baensch Aquarium Atlas Volume 1, Page 807)

(Top of the 2 is Nandus Nandus, bottom is Polycentrus Punctatus)

I'm not sure exactly what they are, be interested to see them at different angles. cool find. shall be following this thread for a positive ID.

Ive been looking through books but cant find any if much info on them...so my hunt continues.

if you look at yours pelvic fins they look alot longer and different shape than Nandus Nandus but the same shape and length as Polycentrus Punctatus.

Very nice fish, good pickup

so yeah my bet is on Polycentrus Punctatus

DA

Well i agree its definitely not a nandus nandus, i have 4 of those little beauties.

did some more research last night and even on the web there is very little info about these fish.....not bad for £4 :)

It possibly could be, very similar if not the same.

/me gets a large spanner and throws it in...

try: Polycentrus schomburgki

granted not the best image, but without scanning one in from my book this is the best i could find:

oh and the book I refer to is: Dr. Axelrod's mini-atlas of freshwater aqauirum fishes 3rd edition (ISBN: 0-86622-385-1)

I think the marks on your fish and the general shape arent right for P. Punctatus

on another note, they are the same family as Nandus nandus, which is Nandidae

EDIT:

HERE is a better pic:

nandus2.jpg

note how Polycentrus Punctatus has solid colour on the dorsal yet P. schomburgki has clear dorsals like yours.

I think we need pics of each fish Matt, as the one in the bottom pic just poking his head looks to have a different head shape. So you may have a nice mixed bag there.

they look a lot better like that then on web cam lol

Polycentrus Punctatus is the same fish as Polycentrus Schomburgki accodring to Axelrod...but mine seem to change colour like Chameleons. When i get home at night they are all dark, once i put the lights on the tank on they all lighten up almost immediately.....

damn fish!
