New Fish Owner Need Stocking And Other Advice

Thanks for all the help everyone I will check everything again in the morning and if I need to do another water change. I will post my morning results and see if there is something that I need to change at that time.

If I read it correctly, you still have 0.5 ppm of both ammonia and nitrites. That means that another 50% water change is in order now, not tomorrow.

For the record she doesn't have plecos she has other algae eaters - check the stock thread there is a pic.

A small ammount of salt to reduce the NitrIte is less harmful than the nitrite.

Definitely need another 50% waterchange, probably another tonight too - expect to need to do this for several days.

Guys, what is the consensus here? I'm feeling like my original concern about old tank syndrome being an issue has been pretty much made a thing of the past by the water changes that have now taken place. And to me that means that the water changes could and perhaps should be of a higher percentage, like 70%, at least until we see it a little more under control. (??)

I must agree with you WD. As an add on to the idea of using salt to help with nitrites, salt can indeed help slightly if you have excessive nitrites but a water change will do far more good and not add another stress factor for your fish.

OK ryanvb13, the consensus here is that you should go ahead and perform a series of larger 70% changes, if necessary, to make sure your ammonia(NH3) and nitrite(NO2) are down below 0.25ppm such that you can buy some time prior to it building up to 0.25ppm and needing another water change.

I've forgotten whether you're using good liquid-reagent based tests. Is that the case?

Yes I have been using the same type of test that you mentioned that you use. I have been doing water changes every day now and my last reading has the Ammonia and Nitrite between 0 and .25 it wasn't .25 on either it was lighter and closer to 0 but I didn't want to cal it exactly 0. My Nitrate is at 10 and my PH levels are at 7.0. I think these are all good numbers. I am going to retest again today and do another change if necessary. The last change we did we did about 60% and took out the old gravel and washed it the test after that one is where I got my numbers from.

P.S. Thank you all so much for the help that you provided to me I really appreciated it. I don't think I would have been doing to well with out ya'll.
