New Emperor 280 Filter

I have a 55 gal tank with a top fin filter, various small fish guppies reproducing as well as platies, I found a great deal on a emperor 280 bio wheel filter. can I change out the filters on an established tank. top fin seems to be allowing water to get a little cloudy, how do I procede to change them out ?Ty in advance for any advice

This belongs in the general discussion area, so I will move it.
Filters are nothing but a piece of hardware when you first get them. If given the right conditions and enough time they will eventually become functional biological filters. If you intend to replace a filter with another without moving the media, most likely with those two filters, you shoyuld let the new filter run on the tank along with the old one for at least 6 weeks. Even then the new filter may not be ready to take over as the primary filter at the end of that time.

I am new and sorry to have posted in the wrong place ty for fixing it, since no one commented I put the new filter on the old tank, seems ok but did lose one raspora put old filter in new tank, letting it run till friday one week then adding a pleco, and two female guppies a day at a time gonna try to eventually move all females to the 05 gal tank. leave all males, platties and rasporas in 55 gal tank, gettin too many fry. also wanna give my females a break from a very aggressive yellow male, all baby boys are lookin like him. this is fun. thankyou old man for your help
