Hi everybody - thank you for having such an informative forum - really useful info for newbies like me!

I bought an aqua 30, 35 litre tank which i set up following instructions via a video on youtube. The substrate is sand which i washed thoroughly, added a couple of artificial plants which again, i washed very well (tap water for both). I filled the tank, switched on the filter and a day later the tank is still very cloudy. Was i correct in turning the filter on straight away? as all it seems to be doing is moving the cloud around!!

I have no intention of putting any fish in it don't worry - not until my tank is in tip top condition to do so.

Please help me... i am so looking forward to becoming the keeper of a beautiful aquarium

hi there mate dont worry bout the cloudy tank it will settle down commonly know as a sand storm basically just leave your tank alone and it will clear itself !!!

Welcome to the forum Betta Netty.
The sand storm will clear in 1 to 3 days depending on how much filter flow you have to keep things stirred up. Turning off the filter would just delay the process of pulling out the extremely fine sand, almost dust, that will never truly settle. While you are waiting for the tank to start looking clear, it is not too soon to start cycling the filter on the tank.
If you don't already know what that means and how to do it, we have some excellent threads on this forum specifically set up to help you. There is a link to fishless cycling in my signature area that will take you to a thread on the subject. Once you have had a chance to read through the thread, come back and ask questions because we are always ready to help a new person get things right for their fish.

just to add some weight to the above, reading the fishless cycling thread and following the instructions in it is the single most important thing you need to do before getting fish, so make sure you don't skip this step!!
