Neon Tetra

Hello

I was debating getting a few neons to add to my school of danios/white cloud. Would the neons school with the danios? Or would they need their own seperate group? Also the fact that they are prone to neon tetra disease worries me...can all fish catch this? or would only the neons die off if this were to occur?

From personal experiance, they will not shoal with the Danio's. So a group of at least 5/6 will be needed for the Tetras.

Neon Tetra disease can affect other fish aswell.

No Neons will not shoal with danio's
It has been known for different tetra species to shoal together (neons, black neons and cardinals) but it is rare.

the minimum considered for a group is atleast 6 or more. Many people have had less but it just isnt fair on the fishies.

The most common fish to catch Neon Tetra Disease are other characins, but its becoming more and more frequent for cichlids, angelfish and cyprinids to catch it aswell.

I read that Danios and Rasboras can catch it. It worried me too when I got my Neons and then a few days after I did think they might have it but I'm guessing I'd be more than aware by now and they seem fine *touch wood*. It's the thing about it always being there that worries me the most. That once you have it in your tank, without a complete strip down and sterilisation, you always have it in your tank!

I think ( I hope) NTD is actually quite rare though.

hi just wanted to remind you that neon tetra need a tank that is fully matured for at least a year dunno about the neon tetra disease but i think its quite rare. Someone will correct me anyway.

this tank maturity thing is getting longer and longer!

it used to be 6 months, now has gone to a year? where is the evidence on this?

we had a debate about this in the new freshwater section of the forum, a few weeks back, there was a couple of memebers who added then to a newly cycled tank with no problems, i feel having to wait a year is a bit to long.

why not go for cardinal tetra if your worried about ntd? they get slightly bigger but have more and better colouration and are immune to neon tetra disease

I have several Neon Tetra comments:

1. I put a shoal of 6 Neons in my 26 gallon after only 1 month post-cycle. They have all been doing great for the 3 months since. I think it depends on how well your tank is maintained as to how well the fish do.

2. I'm not convinced about the magic shoaling number. My Neons don't usually shoal together at all, except when I do tank cleaning. Perhaps I need more of them!

3. My Neons are in with Danios and Glofish, and they do not shoal with them. (also have Bolivian Rams) They do all get along fine, though. The Neons are the most aggressive eaters in the tank, and regularly beat out the larger fish for the food.

I do think that the cardinal tetras are tons prettier than the average neon tetra, however the prices are usually waay too high in my opinion. I will pay good money for a beautiful healthy fish, but not a bite size one . Idk I might hit the lfs to see where the price is at for them, because the immunity thing sounds pretty nice , but I was more looking to add to the school I already have. If I add a whole new school I'm worried about overstocking..

And I agree with Gvilleguy. I think people say wait on the neons purely to avoid them being susceptible to NTD, but I think if it's cycled and you maintain it well..then there shouldn't be an issue adding them earlier.

Hello again

I went to the store and amazingly cardinal tetras on are sale for $1 =D woo hoo...except they didn't have any in..typical. I also liked the black neon tetra but again that brings me back to the ntd worry. I'm wondering if I have any room to really be considering this

my stocking at the moment:

4 zebra danios
2 leopard danios
1 white cloud
2 rams

Do I have room for any more schooling fish? I'm looking for something with color. My boyfriend keeps claiming that I don't have any "colorful fish" in my tanks and I want to put something in there that he would like. Apparently glowfish are more colorful and "better" but idk if I can have as many as I would need to make that cool affect. Are there any other colorful schooling fish out there besides the cardinal and the glowfish? and again do I have room?

How big is your tank? I have four glofish and three zebras - and it's cool because they shoal together since they are all Danios.

It's only a 10G but I change the water everyday (trying to keep the rams in good water). I might lessen the water changes but want the rams to settle first as this is only their first week

I would not recommend adding more fish to a 10 gallon. I think you are full already. What type of rams are they?
