I had a neon tetra on its own for a while, the rest died and it took me a little while before I could go get more. I have more now and is kind of losing its color. I think it may have been a bit dull before and I just had nothing to compare it to. It did get picked at a little while it was by itself so it may be stress related. Do you think it will start looking better now that there are more of them and it's no longer being picked at?

How many gallons is the tank please?
How many fish and which type?
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph?
How did the other Neons die please?

Does the Neon show any of these signs.

Is the fish still eating.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
NTD Signs,
Red area will look bleached out. Bleached out patches.
Blue area will have a milky substance, or turn a golden yellow colour.
Black lining around the tail area.
Fish will leave shoal.
Fish will become restless.
Bent spine.
Fish can also look wasted away. Very thin.
Lumps on belly that go to a point.
Swimming in an odd manor.
Later stages dropsy, popeye.

The fish is still eating just like it normally does

It's red area does have a bit of discoloration, it is kinda pale in some spots.

His stripe is definitely still blue, though not quite as bright as it should be, just enough to be able to tell a difference.

It did leave the other tetras behind every little bit, but I just put them in 2 days ago so it could have just been getting used to having more of its own kind again I guess.

It doesn't really look thin but it does look like it could eat a little more.

I don't see the other symptoms though and I don't have the answer to the second one. I have separated it from the other fish now. Also, it has a spot just above it's mouth that it keeps bumping into the wall of the tank.

It's good that you have isolated him. I lost a whole tank to NTD.
I wouldn't add any new fish for a few months. The disease can stay around for a while.

That's good to know. Is there any chance of survival with this?

No sorry. NTD is fatal and can also effect other fish.
Keep him isolated in a isolation tank if he gets worse put him out
of his misery.
Keep an eye on the symptoms of NTD,
Not all fish will show the same symtoms.
sterilize equipment after use. Especially if you have other tanks.

Wish we had better news for you.
Good Luck.

I'd prefer not to think about it but if the time comes, what would be the most humane way to put him out of his misery?

I know how you feel it awful.

You can chop the fish head off. But this method not for me.

I prefer this method.
Add some ice cubes to very cold water. Wait till they have thawed abit. Add the fish
to the water. it shouldn't take long.
Or take the clove oil route. I have no advice as I have never used cloves oil.

There is a columnaris infection in asian bred neons causing false ntd.

He is still alive and has improved some. He still has a growth just above his mouth, though it is smaller. He still has some slightly discolored places on his red area and there is a little gold around his blue stripe. He is eating good and behaving normally, except hitting the growth on the tank. I've been treating with melafix since I posted this. If it was neon tetra disease wouldn't he have died by now?

How long has he been like this?
It can take over a month. Depends on each fish involved.
It does sound like NTD.

It's been a month at the absolute least and I'm sure it's been longer than that.

OK. Just keep a close eye on him.
Just with all your other Neons dying and then this one showing some NTD symtoms you have to be cautious.

The growth above his mouth does it look greyish or white?
Any pink or red eges on the outside, or in the centre of the growth?
Is the growth flat to the skin or raised?
