I have been breeding and raising mollies, swordtails, and guppies as a hobby for a year now. However, it just seems to have gotten out of control. I have 3 tanks running. One contains the adults, the next tiny fry and then the "teens". I leave the new fry for about a week so the adults can eat many of the babies, however (i dont mean to sound cruel) they dont eat enough. I feed them once a day, and intoduced 3 tetras to the tank to see if those help with contol.
Anyone with some suggestions to help me with this predicament would be appreciated. I dont mind raising a few fry, but it has just gotten out of control.

Thanks ahead of time

I find that the only way I can control the breeding in my tanks is to sell off most of the adults once in a while. By selling adults instead of fry, I keep my breeding population young and vigorous and the buyers get mature fish that they can truly judge for quality. As a wild type breeder, I am not concerned about which particular color pattern I am preserving that way. The wilds should be random selected anyway. I take mine to club auctions to sell them.

yea that seems to be a problem as well "selling them". I post on the internet on a news site local to the area, but i do not get many bites. I usually sell the "fry" when they are 6 months or more old. Know of any good places to sell fishies???

it may sound cruel to you...but try also selling them for others to use as feeders -

considering they are just ones who managed to escape long enough to grow, you should be able to sell them in huge quantities (at a cheap price)

at least it will help you move your population and free up some room! :good:

The easiest place I have found to sell fish is to other fish keepers at a club auction. I attend several each year but only two of those are at my own club. Around here, all clubs welcome sellers and buyers from outside their club. The auctions are fund raisers for the clubs because they take a percentage of the money involved and simply increasing the volume of sales benefits them as a club. More participants means they are not just selling to each other. My own club has about 10 regularly attending members but we see around 80 to 120 people attend our auctions. That means there is someone there that is interested in almost any breed or fancy variation of almost any fish. The one thing that is certain is that no two of us like exactly the same fish. It is what keeps the hobby healthy and the selections at the LFS more than just the 5 or 10 biggest sellers.
If you like hard to find fish like wild-type livebearers, that is also your best source for them. You will find things at a club auction that are simply never seen elsewhere.

Where would I search for those? That sounds like alot of fun and I would enjoy going to one, even if I don't sell any fish!

A place to start is with our own club guide. Start here. Many of the clubs maintain a web site where they would post announcements of things like meetings and auctions.
