Hi I need some urgent advice,my boyfriend brought me 3 Angels on Sat. they have all appeared fine and helathy but today my electricity supply went off for about 3 minutes. One of the angels went into shock I think as the light flickered backon and is now lying on the bottom of the tank in between floating around, pretty lifeless.

What can i do

Thanks in advance

sounds strange, 3 minutes of filter failure or flickering lights shouldn't do that to the fish!

what are your water stats for ph, ammonia, nitrite and ntirate?

how long has the tank been running?

how big is the tank?

what filter do you have running?

how did you acclimitise the fish?

Sadly poor angel as died. :rip:

I'm gonna take him to pet shop, see if they can see any sign of disease as it's only 2 minutes away. I can't see any.

I done STATS last night
Amonia 0
Nitrite 0
PH 7.0-7.5
NITRATE 50

I done this just after I put some plants in the water so will do another check shortly.

I cleaned the tank out on Saturday tested the water then and it was ok, maybe bit higher in nitrates. We got the fish on Saturday after cleaning tank out, did notice that one of the Angels had a nipped fin and wasn't swimming around too well but it's swimming around fine now.

Angels can be quite delicate when first introduced sometimes, especially if they come from poor stock which sadly nowadays they often do.

Is your tank under 6 months old? as they really shouldn't be in tanks newer than that because they're not mature enough to get them through the sometimes tricky acclimitisation period :/

The tank is about 6 or 7 months old now.

The other angel is also looking a bit iffy, the one with he already nipped at tail. What do you recommend. LFS have advised to do water change but would this be adding more stress to fish already ?

sadly you should prepare yourself for the possibility of loosing them all.

It sounds like the tank isn't mature enough for angels just yet.

Trying to take them back to the lfs when they're already poorly could kill them so don't do that. Do a water change but make it a small one, and when you put the water in do it gradually so as not to shock them.

Sorry I didn't mean taking the life one back I menat the dead one, so they can see if their is any infection but from what I can see there isn't.

I'm very paranoid, I think it's called being a beginner and redaing too much in the inital stages esepecially when you lose a few. I asked lfs yesterday to check water as I thought there might be something wrong as I had lost a few fish a week or two ago, can't remeber excatly now but I posted about it then. LFS said water was fine but after putting plants in I checked again last night just to make sure and it seemed fine.

I'm gonna do just a small water change, lfs also advised to put some tonic salt? in water, is this correct?

what other fish do you have? some fish react very badly to salt so you must be careful, it's a bad idea to put it in if you have any plecs, catfish or loaches, there are other fish that it causes a problem too but those are the main problems.

Hi Miss Wiggle,

thanks for replying back to me.

The other fish I have are in my signature. I also got a loach so I wont boher wih the salt.

Willjust have to wait patiently and see what happens iwth other angels.

Also my loach just hides away nearly all day is this normal? does he need a buddy?

yeah i think all you can do it a small water change and monitor the situation. I don't think it's a disease so there's nothing you can treat for. Just have to hope they're strong enough to pull through, monitor the water quality and make sure you keep it sparkling for them, water changes every day if need be but keep them fairly small (20%).

i'm no expert on loaches but i believe they are best kept in groups.

Hi, think i've found the problem.

I noticed earlier today my rosy barb having a go at the other angel and as he tried to swim away he swam into the bubbles from the filter and done a few flips, before that he seemed ok, was swimming around but now he's lifeless. Do angels not cope with a strongish flow of bubbles from the filter?

I know the rosy barbs have stressed him out but it definatly seemed like it was the bubbles from the filter that done the damage

I would bet it's stress from the barbs nipping. Add some current that they may not be usd to on top of the stress from being chased & nipped, and the fish goes more or less into shock. What type of filtration are you running? I have box and sponge filters on my growout tanks, I keep them to about 3 bubbles per second until most of the spawn is at least pea body size. Once they get a little bigger I'll turn it up little by little.

I've never seen any shop sell angels smaller than dime body size, by the time they are that big they should be able to handle plenty of current, though they don't really like it & will try to avoid it. Depending on how they were raised they may not have been exposed to much current. This is something some breeders don't think about, the tank their fish may end up in. As my angels start getting towards dime size the air flow gets opened up, think of a small pot of water on a good rolling boil. That's what it's like above the filters. The end customer may have a tank with a huge hob or canister filter, one blast from that & the angel is a goner if it's not used to it.

Turn down the air flow to the filter, and seperate the barbs from the angels. Every few days turn up the air flow a little more.

Sadly my other two angels died. I am not going to get any othr angels for a while now.

I think it was a case of them getting blown about by the filter even though I did after taking advice turn it down but I also think the rosy barbs had a place to play too.

I am really upset, the angels were lovely :rip:
