we'd been looking for a group of dwarf cichlids for our tank for a while, hadn't got a particular species in mind, just knew we'd see something and it'd grab us!!

well that happened this weekend, saw some nannacara anomala's in for a reasonable price, never seen them before and just thought, ooooh purdy

fish shop had a copy of beansch so we quickly checked requirements and knowing everythings OK bought a group of them (8, not sure the m/f ratio, they were mostly hiding last night so couldn't see all of them at once to get numbers!). done a bit of googling and i'm confident we have what they require, seem like any of the apisto's really, if anything then a bit hardier.

Just wondering if anyone's kept these before and can offer any insight or personal experience?

They are nice little fish, to tell males and females apart its the same as apistos really males are brighter and have longer pointy fins. If you have kept apistos these need basically the same water parameters. Personally I would only keep a pair in a tank, as they, like most cichlids, can be highly territorial. To get the best out of them keep them with some small characins, like pencilfish and tetras, as the N. Anomla, use these as an "early warning system" ie if they're present then its safe to come out. This makes them bolder and more enjoyable.
