I have a 50L tank with angels and snails. The angels have been there for about a year, but I've had to keep replacing the snails as they keep dying. I never expected that the snails would be harder to look after than the angels.

Water chemistry is all normal, the only interesting point is that I do keep the temperature a bit high at 28C (81F). Could this be killing them?

They had plenty of food, because now that I'm down to only one snail, the algae is taking over the tank.

Well, how big are you angels. What type. The reason may because the tank could be too small for the mystery snails(according to your signature), because there may not be enough food. Also they aren't good at cleaning algea. The best thing to get to clean your algea would be a sucker fish. There is many different types that you could get. Sm to lg to xlg. I hope this helps.

When you say food do you mean algae? Mystery snails(most of the time its not a mystery and a variety of apple snails)aren't well know fo eating algae. Try feeding it lettuce or cucumber. In short, they might be starving.

i agree with the above. Mystery/Apple snails are not all that good at being algae eaters, and like most animals prefer a varied diet. In addition to cucumbers and lettuce, they will also eat bloodworms, flake food that sinks, most any sinking pellet foods, and just about everything else too. Algae alone will not sustain them, so it is essential you don't consider them as solely aglae eaters or the aquarium's trash pick up crew. You need to ensure they get a good and varied healthy diet.

I'VE BEEN STARVING THEM???? AAWWW....poor things. They do have live plants that they nibble on once in a while, but the plants are otherwise thriving.

In a cool 70- 75 tank the snails will live for around three years the warmer the water the shorter thier lifespan. If you go to http://www.applesnail.net you will get further info. Basically at that temp thier normal life span will be around a year and depending on what size you buy them at they may only have a month or two left when purchased.

Wow! Lucky I read this, my new apple snail just croaked and I couldn't figure out why! I starved him too! Shoot, and with the three bucks I spent on him I could have bought another cory!!! Well, at least I'm not the only one going nuts wondering why my snail died, I guess I'll just wait a bit on getting another...

:rip: for all the snails that Eleonora lost, and my apple snail too...
