My Thoughts About These Forums...

If you need specific information and can't find it on here.....Why not go to a site/forum that specifies in just what you're looking for? That seems to be the most logical thing to do...

:/

I do.

. But It would be nice to see the forums move in a more specific, information sharing direction.
I doubt thats possible, people come on here for something interesting to do, answering questions all the time is boring, afterall the general definition of a forum is -A place for discussion, so technically its not primarily ment for q's and answers.
I still can't see how the forum could have more information, the members do the best to answer questions but they don't know every answer.
I've never, ever, seen someone with there question unanswered...There were probably some, but thats only when no one genuienly knew the answer.

Out of curiosity what questions of yours were unanswered?

I don't exactly know what has changed your perception of these forums. You say there's been "shift in the direction of the forum", how so exactly?

Firstly, not to sound like I'm all high and mighty, 'cause I'm not, but I've been a member a lot longer than you, and I personally don't think that the forum has shifted direction very much at all. If anything, it is a little more fact & information orientated, and again I hope this doesn't sound like bragging, but I feel I was a big proponent of the recently opened Scientific subfourm where science and facts and information is discussed a lot more.

Secondly, have you looked at this from your personal point of view? If you were a complete newbie when you started the forums, specific detailed information probably isn't what you were focussed on, but now that you have more experience, you are seeking the more detailed info.

Thirdly, the more detailed info isn't as common, as you obviously know. And, because it is less common, less people are going to know it, and by simple math that means less people are going to log on and be able to answer those questions.

Again, I think you aren't taking into account that forums are imperfect and human beings are imperfect. Unless you are going to pay to have an expert standing by answering your questions, you have to remember that that is 100% a volunteer organization. People aren't always going to be able to promptly and accurately answer every question you have.

What Bignose said makes a lot of sense. Of course, whatever Bignose says ALWAYS makes sense. We are fortunate indeed that there are members like him who stick around here despite some of the lighter and occasionally nonsensical, or even mean comments that some members make.

TFF has grown more than any of us old timers expected, but there is still something here for everyone. :D

Well, I've been had. My fun is over. I am just an impatient piece of poo when is comes to help, and done arguing about this topic. TFF is the greatest and I could never leave. It was fun and did beautifully illustrate the fact that more people are willing to comment on issues like this and banter back and forth, rather than help with questions. There are also a ton of people willing to help and I appreciate that too.

Of course I doubt I will get help anymore with my controversial comments...

Oh yes... do I see a possible romance budding between Bignose and Inchworm...?

ahh now I see why you dont get many answers.

 Hi Chuka1212 :)

Thank you for starting this excellent thread. :flowers: It's given many members something to think about too, and attracted many to post their opinions. TFF is, in addition to being a place to get answers to serious questions, is also a place to share friendly conversation with other fishkeepers. With that in mind, your thread has been a great success.

I MERELY FIND IT INTERESTING, AS MUCH AS I LOVE THESE FORUMS, THAT CHIT CHAT AND OPINION POSTS OFTEN GET HUNDREDS OF HITS (like this one) WHILE SOMEONE SEEKING INFORMATION IS OFTEN LEFT HANGING. I HAVE NOTICED A SHIFT IN THE DIRECTION OF THE CONTENT OF THE FORUMS.

One of the main reasons members don't get answers to their questions is because they post their question in the wrong place. Tropical Chit Chat is very busy and if someone doesn't reply quickly, the thread will sink out of sight and might never get a response. I try to move threads that will do better in other sections, but I just can't read all of the threads in TCC every day. It's up to the members to post in the most appropriate places to get the best results, yet many of them are impatient and don't want to have to wait as long as it takes to get answers in the specialty forums.

In regards to the comment about me not willing to do the research myself:
For any given question that I ask I have already: looked in the aquarium books I have, searched on the internet, and asked pet shop employees. When I get conflicting info or confusion AFTER doing these things, is when I typically ask a question. Though no one can be sure, I feel that most people are this way. And to those that think the internet is the perfect, omniscient resource... I recently did a ton of research on planted tanks and counted all of the inconsistencies that I found. It was 12. That is a lot of questions un-answered.

Of course I doubt I will get help anymore with my controversial comments...

Please don't feel like you have to explain why you have posted any legitimate question on the forum. That, in addition to reading books and asking store employees questions, IS a very good way of doing research. Sure, it may have been asked and answered before, but it never hurts to ask again. Many of the newer fishkeepers will benefit by reading a current thread and even by adding additional questions that advance the discussion. On a general forum, such as TFF, your posting a serious question means a lot.

Remember though, people of all levels of experience and education post here. Some of them have had years and years of fishkeeping experience, while others have just started and only know what they have read on TFF and other sources online. Consider the similarity to going out on the street and asking everyone you meet a question about some timely bit of news. You would surely get a variety of answers due to personal interpretation too.

Oh yes... do I see a possible romance budding between Bignose and Inchworm...?

No, not at all!  But if you spend as much time on the forum as I do, you will recognize some of the members who can be relied on for a detailed and scientifically based answer as opposed to giving only his experience. I was just happy to walk into an opportunity to express some respect for a member who deserves it as much as he does. :D

Ahhh, thanks Inchworm. I have warm fuzzies now... really, I appreciate it. Totally joking about the romance thing, I am sure you know.

And xxBarneyxx, what was your comment supposed to mean? :)

Can I hazard a guess here? I'm thinking he meant that you did sound just a *little* bit like you were going to stamp your foot and throw your teddy there at the end. I'm sure you didn't mean it to come across like that, the rest of your thread has been a nice discussion.

I think it just read wrong :)

i shouldnt worry about, not having your questions anwsered from now on. there is nothing you have said here, imo, that would cause that. indeed, the fact that you have started this thread, has allowed many to get an over vew of how some of the contributors view this forum, and how it effects their posting. that in itself was well worth the thread. and if i am honest, i often answer posts, and when i have finished i have no idea who the OP was!!

Good grief!! While generally stalking you through the forums (Saturday morning, cold, nothing to do today except grocery shopping, staying home as long as possible, trying not to move to stay warm), the purpose of the stalking was to check on your posts that were not answered, I found this one.

That has to be one of the highest view ratings of a personal post that IS NOT a fight or slanging match, in the history of the fish forums!! You sure got your moneys worth of replies on that one, can that not make up for anywhere else you have felt slighted?

A great big wow to having found such an amazing place.

btw did you ever buy the Snowball? I have a couple of them and they are easy to keep.

I think that the thing is , the forum is just too huge, and there arn't enough people to spread out , and cover all the sections. What we need is more people, and i think we shouldn't expand the forum, or add new sections, until there are soo many members that the forum will have hundereds of people on at a time. There is alot of activity here in the summer, but not alot on the regular days of the year. Sometimes there are only 24-30 members online. Even if they worked there hardest to cover all the posts itll be a herculian task. That is why i think we should seriously consider advertising and recruiting new members.

May I add, im dead impressed with how long people have kept this going with real replies :) go forum!

+1 To Pointless Contributions.

I actually think this forum has just the right amount of traffic.

A lot of other forums have so little traffic that it can take weeks for a conversation to take hold. On the other hand, Reefcentral (which I sometimes check for salty stuff) gets so much traffic that I've had posts drop down 4 or 5 pages in only a few days. No genuine discussion seems to happen there, only unanswered questions and people about their gigantic peni---uhh---tanks!
