I woke up this morning and found out my pleco had the case of rigor mortis. :-( He was so young too. Only 3.5" long. *takes a moment of silence* I have an odd suspicion that the cucumber I fed him was poisoned though. He was fine till I gave him a treat last week and then it went all downhill.

Here is a recent picture of the cutey.

Now I need a fish to replace him. :( I was thinking something more hardy. Also able to cope with water pH around 6. For some reason the pH in my tank always drops to 5.5 or 6. The tap water I put in is 7 too. Also able to handle any harrassment that 5 angelfish can deal out. Preferably eats algae. Any ideas guys?

Aww I'm sorry to hear about your royal :( It's always a shame when we lose a fish.

Sadly though, I wouldn't recommend any more fish as your tank is already overstocked with the 5 angels - and it might be best to work out why the ph is crashing so low - what are your full tank params (inc. Kh) and what maintenance do you do?

Depending on the dimensions, you could get away with two angels in a 30g, with maybe a bristlenose or similarly sized small plec.

Just out of interest, is there any bogwood in your tank?

I do 20% water change each week and I do have bogwood in the tank. Its been in there for a year now. I know the bogwood tannins can lower pH but I did boil the darn thing for over an hour before I put it in last year.

RIP little guy. I probably will stop feeding cucumber to my clown loach from now on.

I'm so sorry to hear about your pleco. I had my Common Pleco die last week due to an AquaSafe overdose

now ain't that a controversy?
The brand name clearly is 'aquasafe' but it is not safe.
luckily my oceanfree med has no harm if there is an overdose or an underdose but it still does the job.

Is AquaSafe dechlorinator? I didn't think it was possible to overdose that (as some brands recommend a higher dose for new fish), unless you accidentally did like 10 x the dose?

The only reason I can think that the cucumber caused the death of your pleco is if perhaps you didn't wash it first and it had pesticides on it? Did you wash it first? I've never heard of cucumber poisoning! You should always wash any veg thoroughly before it goes in the tank, I even wash organic veg, just in case.
