My Pleco Keeps Trying To Clean My Datnoid...

When I said I had to wield the hammer, I meant I euthanized him. I'm talking about a 4 pound hammer here, swung to the head with no hesitation, so instant death.

A plec can kill thru stress. He will stress your dat into a secondary infection, if not directly by opening his slime coat. Where I live, a plec as large as the one I had, has no option other than a pond, and no one is gonna want one who has developed a slime coat addiction.

And to whoever suggested I throw him in a swamp, that is the most irresponsible thing I have EVER heard :grr:  . I will not introduce a non-native species. My local lake is already on the brink because of several.

I am a responsible fish keeper. Everyone is overlooking my first advice which was to try to feed him more and if that does not work, rehome him,, with full disclosure to the new owner that he has a slime coat addiction. Euthanasia is only a last resort.

If I had a pool, with a heating system, a gigantic pleco would be what I'd have in there. LOL.
Either that or a bunch of Hoplos.

so....

angel
blue lobster
pangasius?
discus
turtle
panaque
spotted climbing perch?

all in the same tank? Blimey.

dont forget the Dat too in that list......

its no doubt that you have a great collection of fish but seriously they are not a good combination to keep together.

firstly the lobster if given the chance will attack the fish when they rest at night so its not a good idea to keep lobsters and fish together. i think the same will apply to the turtle, they have strong mouths that will shred a fish.

the catfish which looks like a pangasius will get huge and need a massive tank, way bigger than you can imagine... the angels and discus are fine together as long as the angels give the discus chance to eat, this is normally the main concern of adding these 2 species together but in this tank with the species kept thats really the last thing to worry about... also discus prefer high temps of about 30 degrees C which many of the other fish you have will not feel comfortable im affraid

the panaque pleco will also get huge, ive seen one at about 16 inches before but this wont happen quickly so not to worry too much although they do need wood in their diet and given wood they will eat and eat and eat leaving a huge mess behind  i had one that was about 7 inches and it covered the substrate of a 6.5x2x2 tank overnight!!!!!

the spotted perch are a cool fish but predatory. the fish in the tank will be ok as they arent too small to be seen as food.

to be safe i would rehome the turtle and lobster straight away along with the pangasius because when he starts growing everything in that tank will be lunch... then think about what fish from the remaining you prefer. if its discus then i would settle with them and the angel and maybe add a few more and some dithers such as cardinal or rummynose tetras which can handle the higher temperatures needed. as this started off about the panaque slime eating then im affraid he will have to go too. take him to an lfs and explain the situation tell them to keep it with other plecs or as a singleton and see if they can find a plec fanatic who can add it to a group. then theres the dat.... these get huge and arent an easy fish to keep so this will have to be moved on at sometime so if you decide to take some advice then this is the best time to do it

as i said you do have a great collection of stunning species but they just wont get along as soon as they need their own space and territories. i fear the discus wont get enough food as they are slow grazers and are in among some greedy and fast eating fish. that along with the temperature of the tank wont suit them at all. personally i would just keep the angels and discus and maybe the perch although keeping this fish will limit your stocking if you wish to add tetras or smaller dithers to make the discus feel more secure. up the temp to 30 degrees and if the tanks big enough add a few more discus as they do prefer to be in groups, the more the merrier depending on space that is.

its your tank and they are your fish but you did come here with a concerning matter. this can be resolved by removing just 1 fish but i think that your problems will only get worse as these fish grow a bit. if you take the advice or not please keep us up to date with the tank and fish as they are some stunning fish you have.

Pretty much what i was thinking as i went down the the pics. I was looking (and hoping) for something that would show them being different tanks, but all looks like the same tank.

As Zod said, you have some beautiful species examples in there, but they shouldnt really be together. The whole tank is a fight waiting to happen, and there are going to be some big winners, and some even bigger losers unfortunately.

Very interested in this Plec debate however..... Im assuming we're all talking about the zebra panaque? Are you sure the plec isnt just defending his patch, rather than actively trying to eat live fish? Most species of Plec are pretty territorial. I've never heard of a Plec actively sucking the sides off a fish, but have heard of them chasing stuff around (guarding its "patch"); Chasing leads to stress, stress leads to a depleted immune system and illness, this leads to death, therefore you could understand how a plec could indirectly kill another fish.

none of the fish are lobsters - but the lobster is a lobster, I'm pretty certain of that.

matt said that.....in an incredibly patient and helpful manner :)
well thats what we are here for :)

I've had that datnoid, that lobster, and the pang for over a year in a 150 gallon, they haven't grown more than an inch or so...Thats why i had to move them into the 55 because the fish in the 150 are HUGE now and they'll eat em. The pang actually hasn't really grown at ALL since we got him. its really weird we got him eating goldfish even though he was barely big enough to fit them in his his mouth and STILL he never grew...Same thing with my datnoid.
The discus have no problem getting food. They pretty much have first dibs on bloodworms. If anything, the angels and perches are battling for food..

And the lobster stays under this little house most of the time, he only comes out once in a blue moon [i've even checked in th emiddle of the night] I've had him for a long time and he never messes with anyone, unless i put another lobster in..They all end up dead. EVERY single one. I've given up. He refuses to let another one live in his tank. And I always thought he would snip some of my fishes fins, and that i would have to put him in the feeder tank, but he hasn't soo.

And, the perches also aren't aggressive to my fish except sometimes the bigger perch [paco] attacks the smaller one...Thats about it, they keep to themselves and hang out with donnie most of the day.. My turtle, i thought i was gonna have to move him into my turtle tank, but he ended up not hurting any fish and he didn't mess with my nitrates so he got to stay, he's been there for 3 months and all seems well. I have a home for him when he gets to be around 4 or 5 inches..

The pleco, is just REALLY REALLY tiny, so i'm afraid to put him in anything bigger, I was kinda iffy putting him in the 55...Once he gets big enough he goes to the 150.

And I have no clue what 30 Celsius is...I go by Fahrenheit. And i keep it at 82-85

And donnie is probably one of THE hardiest fish i've had. He's been in a tank with bacterial and fungal infections like 3 different times without even being affected, SOMEONE DROPPED HIM ON THE GROUND! And he's still same ol donnie. I've really never had any problems with him. I love him:) Im getting a tattoo of him on my leg:p Hes the bestestest.
