Excuse the reflection of the door!
Ok so here is my Evasion 120 (260 litres) tank so far. It is currently cycling :S so I took some pics out of boredom. Obviously it needs some work and some more plants, but lack of funds and the fact that Im suffering from a kidney infection have halted further purchases for now.

Cost of secondhand tank - £140
Cost of Eheim 2126 external filter - £149.95
Cost of Hydor airo air pump no 4 - £20.00
Cost of white silica sand x 4 - £12.00
Cost of cheesy ornament - £15.00
Cost of pulling hair, severe boredom and turning into a complete sad fish geek while waiting for it to cycle.........

PRICELESS!!! :hyper:

nice, not seen one of those tanks before, it's lovely

now to be the bearer of bad news

the purple leaved plant is very high maintenance, i've never know anyone manage to actually grow one under standard lighting, it'll probably do ok for a few months then rot away. :/

the plants with variagated leaves are not true aquatic plants, they'll also die off over the next month or so.

best to take them out now really or they'll rot and pollute the tank

:-(

Oh ok! Got ripped off at the local LFS then! I wondered why I couldn't find a pic of the tall plant anywhere? Hmmmm shall I go plant it in the garden then?

ha ha i don't know, could give it a try i suppose!!

The purple plant is not really aquatic but they do "ok" for a little while under water hence why they are sold as aquatic plants. I fell into the same trap. It's all part of the learning process in this hobby. I think buying plants online is a better idea. You get a good selection from greenline aquatic plants and I highly recommend them. :good:

What a nice tank. Bargain even @ 2nd hand & in very good nick by the looks of things. Bow fronted?

Just to back up what has already been mentioned above, as soon as I saw your plants I thought 'oops'.

Why, oh why do fish shops push these plants??? There are many others they can flog so why these? Gets me every time. Indeed I was in a shop today and saw some of those plants you have got for sale.....

Wierd.

Because people like the look of them, they buy them and will come back and buy them again "Oh yeah, I liked that one, lets get it again".
I don't agree with selling non-aquatic plants but that's why fish shops sell them.
Hopefully George's article in PFK will inform alot of the fishkeeping public.

Thanks for all your kind comments! Yeah I was over the moon when I went to see this tank and saw the condition it was in! The last owner was upgrading and moving home and needed it gone that week, hence the price was low. Looked them up and they are £600 new!!! It is only a few months old. Yes it is bow fronted with silver trim and silver cupboard with thick glass doors! Very posh looking! Did take 4 hours to clean mind!!!

Looks bloody huge in our front room, but convinced my other half that it will look good when it's all done and that it was such a bargain!!! Think he is getting used to it! Said it looked like someone had parked a smart car by the sofa the day we got it!

Yeah, about the plants! I feel like an idiot now! Paid £10 for 5 good sized plants and trusted the LFS that they would be aquatic plants! Will do some research next time :good:

Word to the wise....

...if you get more plants and BEFORE you put them in the tank....

Check them for pest snails & eggs. Clean them first as well (I have a topic on this somewhere).

I saw that tall green plant you have in your tank being sold as a house plant in ASDA today. Can't remember the name of it though. I'd take it out and repot it for the house. :D

Edit: It could be Dracaena sanderiana, a.k.a ribbon plant, if so it should be kept in doors.
