My New Rotkeils

Is there anything you don't know? lol!!Thanks for the help mate. I am going to the lfs on friday to get some plants so will have a look into them so i have a better idea of what to pick. Going for another firemouth aswell... hmmm or maybe some JD's...

Spotted a tank also!

Great! Keep the updates coming (in the appropriate sections mind).

Haha, i certainly do not know everything, but the stuff i do know is SA/CA Cichlids, and planted tanks. Always more to learn though, thats what i love! My understanding/knowledge of plants is good, and styles/techniques ect, i'm just learning to actually maintain good growth now. I'll master it in a few years hopefully.

Ask me about, Tetras, Barbs, Livebearers and Oddballs, and i'll just stare blankly back at you. I know the names of fish, and basic care, but i certainly don't know much about them, or have experience with them. Get me onto Cichlids and plants i'll blabb on all day and bore most people to death with it :)

What tank you spotted?

Try ND Aquatics.

Fire them off an email with the dimentions of the tank you want if they havnt got in under their price/size list and see what they come back with. In terms of tank and stand, they are brilliant. They offer lights and filtration ect aswell if you fancy it.

What the missus doesnt know won't hurt her ;) Although a big mahogany stand is a little hard to miss, but thats why you try ND Aquatics.

He's a bit reclusive currently. I'll try and get some of him up soon though :)

Thanks James. Looking forward to seeing him. :good:

The biggest of my two Rotkeils is chasing the other one away alot now. I think they could be both males.

They shouldnt both be males. When i got the three, and watching them grow up whilst i had them i am almost certain i had 1M/2F. Which would mean you either have 2F or 1M/1F. If my sexing is correct, which i'm sure it is, then its impossible to have 2M. They'll sort out a pecking order initially, its the 'done' thing with cichlids, so just keep an eye on them.

Thanks James. I have one with colouration on it's face, this is the male i guess? The other one is smaller. Both have pointed fins. Will get some pics up in a bit for you to have a look at. I hope they are m/f :)

Well having just ran downstairs to have a closer nosey at mine, i believe i may have the one i thought to be the male. So if my sexing was correct you would have the two i thought to be females. But get some pictures up anyway and myself and other members can have a good look again to check.

Fin shape/size with Severums isnt the best way to sex them. The most effective/accurate way to sex Severums is to go by the spangles/spots on the cheek and gill plate. Females will have spots on the gill plate whereas males will have more going up around their cheek and possibly around their eyes. Ofcourse there are exceptions to this as its not written as law with genes in any form of nature :) Theres a woman at my work with a big ol' beard, but she's definately a woman

The one i have downstairs has spots/spangles on the gill plate, cheek and around the eyes. Making me believe he is indeed a 'he'. Which certainly explains his boistrous nature, as he was the dominant one when the three were together.

I have just took some pictures, one has the spangles you mention, one not so much.

Any the wiser?

First one is male and the second looks female but probably better to get a closer pic of the facial markings...is there much of a size difference between them?

I only ask on the size because I have 1 female and 5 males from Star4, the female is noticeably smaller than the others...might just be what I got or a temperament/feeding habits thing but I think the fry batches were quite close together and size could be a fairly helpful indicator

These were originally from Star4. Not a massive difference but you can tell one is bigger than the other.

Here is a closer picture. He/she os definately camera shy! lol. :)
