Not when they're young. Supposedly, old males develop a nuchal hump, but it's a pretty half-hearted one compared to those on other cichlids. The best indicators -- as with their close relatives, angels and discus -- is to examine the spawning papillae when they come into breeding conditions. Males have slightly longer, distinctly angled, pointed papillae, compared to the blunt, rounded ones seen on females.
