My New Boy..

Wow, he's just amazingly beautiful. I can't get over it! I love that orange on top, and his marbling is sooooo lovely.

What are you feeding him? I certainly got lucky with my Betta, he eats like a pig, but I started him with frozen bloodworms. I'm surprised that he's bubble nesting already but not eating much.

The food I have the now is called bettagran..like little pellets..I dont have frozen bloodworm..I have dried bloodworm though.. x

Thanks very much tropical mist.. :good: Can I ask what is a VT.. Is it to do with their tails or something? x

Yep, VT stands for Veil Tail. :)

I wonder if he would like it if his pellets were "softened" for him before hand. Maybe if you used a little bit of the tank water in a glass and soaked them for a few minutes he'd be more prone to eat them. I've noticed Darby will sort of gulp water while holding one of his pellets (I use hikari betta bio-gold) in his mouth until it softens up a bit before finally downing it. Especially if he gets one that's a bit larger.

I will try that them Phaedra and see what happens..I hope he eats soon..How long can they go without food for? Do you think its because he is in different surroundings now that he isnt eating? x

From what I've read, they can go quite a long time without eating (there seems to be reports of bagged bettas going for weeks without eating), and it is good to fast a betta once a week to encourage digestion so I wouldn't be too worried.
I've also learned that Bettas are rather picky with their food too, so if he continues being so resistant to what you're giving him, I'd try something else.

He's probably just stressed. Maybe now that he's got a bubble nest, he'll feel more at home. Another good idea is to keep the lights off, it'll make him feel more secure. I know my Darby loves having his decorative barrel to hide in when he wants to get away.

Edit: Oh, and I forgot to add that you might want to call and ask the store what they were feeding him while they had him. Maybe he's just used to a particular brand.

Yeah I think i will ask them what he was eating before... As he is my first betta the day I got him I asked the guy in the shop what to feed him and he gave me that bettagran, and he said they will eat anything (which I dont believe)
Thanks for the help Pheadra I will try keeping the light of for a day or so aswell..x

My pleasure, I'm more than happy to help a fellow newbie. (I just got my 1st betta, Darby last week)

One thing I've learned is that most pet stores have little to no idea how to care properly for fish, so try to take what they say with a grain of salt unless you get lucky and find someone who REALLY knows their fish.
Bettas are carnivores and love live food, but are also notoriously picky eaters.

This link might give you some information if you haven't already seen it:

Oh and before I forget, does he notice that the food is there when you put it in the tank? When I feed Darby I'll wiggle my finger in the water to get his attention, then drop it basically right in front of his face, otherwise he seems to miss it. (Yes, he's spoiled.)

That is a good link..He notices the food when I put it in and he gives the look as if to say "and you think im eating that" then swims away from it.. :shout: I will just have to keep trying with him ..Fingers crossed..x

Well I just had a little bit progress there..I held a dried bloodworm with two fingers and wriggled it about at the top of the water..He actually came over and had a few bites at it.........YIPEEE :yahoo: xx

:yahoo: *Dances along* That's great! I'm so glad to hear that he's already making progress.

I want to warn you, too that dried bloodworms can cause allergic reactions with some people, so be careful with them. :p I'm not trying to scare you, I swear. I've just heard of some REALLY bad reactions.

 Can they...?? I dont really use them much anyway, I usually have the frozen bloodworms..I will have to pick up some more next time Im out..Im so glad he has had a few bites at that worm :hyper: :good: x

He is beautiful...looks a bit like my new one who is so feisty...I sometimes dont name mine straight away sort of worry in case something happens to them

Yeah, I guess most people get at least a little bit of a sneezing fit if they get a whiff of them in the bottle, but one post I read (can't remember which forum now... I'm reading too much lol), the woman couldn't even have them in her house, or touch them or anything. She swelled up like a balloon and had to go to the hospital last time.
Just remember to wash your hands after you touch or hold them. ;)

BTW, have you settled on a name for Mr. beautiful yet?

Aww Liz
I'm hopelessly attached to Darby already, don't get me thinking anything might happen to him!
