My New Betta

Thank you. He seems to know he's pretty! As far as the Dwarf gouramis are concerned, im still skeptical. It seems to depend what mood he's in. one minute the gourami can swim right up to him, touch him with the feeler thing and he isn't bothered in the slightest (they were eating right next to each other this morning with no problems), the next minute, the gourami is on the other side of the tank and the betta goes up to him flaring, they have a bit of a chase then they carry on doing what they were doing. I'll keep my eye on them, if things turn nasty, i'll take them back.

I think it's all down to the individual fish. I've got a female moonlight gourami and a male lavender gourami in with my betta and none of them take any notice of each other. I hope things settle down and work out well with yours. :D

He's a lovely fish. I have the interpet 48L as well, with a betta and khuli loaches. I like how you have decorated the tank it looks very pretty. Just to mention though, if the plants are plastic, or there are sharp bits on the ornaments he may tear his fins on them.

Hi,

Thank you, I checked all the plants/deco when I bought it to make sure there were no sharp edges, most the plastic plants were fine just the pointy one bottom left but thats right in front of the filter and he doesn't go near it because of the current. :good: I was definitely not going to get a planted tank because I cant even look after the plants in my garden, let alone in a tank. Silk plants arn't that available around here, i'd have to order them all online and in that case, you dont know what you're actually getting. So I figured for my first tropical tank, i'd stick with the plastic.

I've never used silk plants before but have just ordered some from e-bay. They are so cheap on there that if I don't like them it doesn't really matter! I tend to stick with Java fern in my tanks as it's the only plant I've ever had that none of my fish munch on! I'm also waiting on a delivery of floating plant for my tanks which hopefully the bettas will like!

Although mine are plastic, my betta definitely likes the floating plant at the top of the tank - there was some sort of bubble nest up there this morning but Im not sure if it's my betta's handy work or whether the filter has been sucking up air bubbles from the air stone. I trashed it during the water change so we will see if he builds another over the next few days. I doubt it's him, hes only been here a few days.

could well of been your betta or even the gourami's :good:

Thats true, Ill keep an eye on them, i've turned the air stone off now because I think it was disturbing the water a little too much for the betta, the flow rate on the filter is right down as well so it should be quite nice in there now.

Just a quick update really, everyone in the tank is mostly getting on fine -some new additions, 2 ghost shrimp (started off with 4, but one climbed out the back of the tank through the hole with the wires, the other mysteriously dissapered - too big to be eaten by any of the fish so no idea  ) 5 neon tetras. Everyone is looking healthy including the two honey gouramis. Having a few issues with the gouramis chasing each other around so I was thinking of taking them back to the LFS - they were the ones I least expected any trouble from! Suprisingly, the betta takes no notice of the other fish, he just spends all day either swimming in the current from the filter, begging for food at the front of the tank or sleeping in his coconut shell. I've noticed quite a few types of food give him bloat quite bad especially those tetra freshdelica things (brineshrimp and bloodworms).

Some updated pics of kazuto! he has grown loads since I got him.
