Hi guys I posted a week ago about my lovely new Betta. He was healthy as far as I could see, slight bit of fin rot on the tail fin, it had a couple of black edges. I put it down to bad water quality at effing Pets at Home and I thought my "good" water quality would help him heal.

Now over 2 weeks after having him he is in a 15g with 4 Corydoras and looks like it is slowly shredding away! The black parts which I thought were fin rot have gone completely and the end of his tail has a slight stringy look to it. The water quality is good, 4 Pandas are fine. It's as if he is finding it hard to swim because he only goes to the surface for air and then just swims back down and lays on the sand. He has been doing this for days now and I have now put the final treatment of Esha 2000 in.

Should I quarantine him tomorrow if he doesn't get any better? If I put him in a tank with nothing else I can rule out it being something in the tank causing it or stressing him out.

I really don't want this guy to die :(

is he a VT?

Unfortunately, it is common for lfs bettas to have continuing finrot issues and you may well get rid of it, for it to return again.

You are best off treating him with intrepid anti-fungal and finrot or epsom salt, if those do not work, keep the water clean.

Feed him brime shrimp in garlic or soak his food in garlic juice, this will boost his immune system and aid in recovery.

epsom salt should only be used for bloating/popeye/dropsy. if you were to use salt, isolate and use aquarium salt. 1 teaspoon/5 gal. do not use in the main tank as corys are sensitive.
is he eating? looking bloated or skinny? is his color off? have you seen him poo?
have you noticed major fin loss? or just the black pieces coming off and leaving the fins looking ragged now? the black was dead tissue. needs to fall off before new growth can begin. have you seen any new growth at all?
id give him a break from the meds before treating again, unless you notice really fast loss of fins. and as mentioned, some meatier foods would be good for him to help repair his fins and boost immune response.
a pic would be very helpful if you are able to post one.
keep us updated.
cheers

ohh i only mentioned salt, as that was the only thing that eventually put a stop to my current male vt's finrot. Thought it might be worth a shot but lora has some good advice there :good:

Thanks for the replies guys. He was fine when I added the Corydoras but he is slowly getting a bit more snappy at them. I think they might not be helping, just stressing him out, so I'm going to move him into a 10g all on his own. That way I can up the temp to 27C without harming the Corys. I will treat with Interpet Anti Fin Rot. Unfortunately today his fins are very frayed at the edges, I have never seen him bite his own tail and there is nothing sharp in the tank, I think it is just stress so hopefully a 10g on his own will help him heal. He is still eating, I've been giving him blood worms as they are high in protein.

sounds like a good plan there. keep us posted.

Well my Betta has now been in the 10g for 24 hours. At first I put my small internal Fluval 1 in there but the current that produced was tremendous. I resorted to pulling it out and now there is only a heater and air stone in there.

I used Tetra Aquasafe for a change instead of Prime as I got it free with my new tank and #92### it colours the water blue! This home will only be temporary for the Betta, if he pulls through I will get a new filter and setup the tank for him but in the meanwhile I don't mind doing water changes.

I have a feeling he has extreme constipation? He has now lost his appetite completely and just sits on the bottom occasionally going up for air. I put Fin Rot meds in the water to help his fins but he just looks so helpless. Not remotely like the lively Betta when I bought him :(

I've stopped feeding him and tried to entice him to eat a pea but he just won't.

I think I've given up hope before he has.

try frozen/freeze dried daphina, its high in protein and may just help the constipation.

epsom salt if you suspect constipation. use 2 teaspoons in the 10 gal tank. or if you use a bath/dip up the dose to 1 teaspoon per gal and leave him up to 30 mins 2X a day. should help hm poo.
cheers
