Hey guys, this is my new Beta, hes the first addition to my new aquarium and hes only young but when I seen his colour as he passed under a bright light in the store i knew i had to have him :D

No names yet however because i promised my girlfriend she could pick it haha so when she comes over later im sure the little guy will have a good name.

However i do have a question, hes only been in the aquarium around an hour or so now but he seems to have spent a majority of it around the surface. He does occasionally dive down every 5 minutes or so but is it normal for a beta to spend time close to the surface or do you think it is because it is new environment?

I'm sure many people will ask this.

Is your tank cycled, filtered and heated properly?

What are your water parameters (ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, pH)

How large is his aquarium? I've found that in smaller aquariums (2.5 gallons and the like), my bettas weren't very active. Now I have a betta in a 26 gallon (98 litre) aquarium and he is very, very active. Take into consideration that he may just be settling in.

Edited to add: He's lovely, by the way!

good questions already asked, so I'll just add my congratulations! He looks very handsome :good: :D

Is that a Fluval Chi he's in?

As said he's a lovely bright looking male. I have one make that tends to stay in the top half of the tank. Just keep an eye on him and if you notice any change let us know

Sorry iv only just have chance to get back to my computer to answer your questions,

Im not entirely sure of the water levels however i did take a sample to the lfs and i was told that it was ready to introduce a slightly hardy fish but to also take another sample back in a day or two to make sure so i plan to go back on wednesday. The tank is filtered and is heated, currently the tank temp goes now lower than 22c and no higher than 26c.

The tank is a fluval chi and is 25 litres.

An update on the situation is i fed him a small amount of food earlier which he ate straight away and once eaten he began to explore more and for brief periods spent time hiding in the foliage within the aquarium. He seems very lively yet is still spending large portions of time towards the surface.

Also he finally has a name, im not sure if there are any football (soccer) fans on these forums but if so, and you are a follower of my local team Liverpool, you'll understand why his new name is Kenny hehe :D

Seeing as he's a blue, surely he should be Dixie!

lol i know there was actually red ones in the store but i dno something about this guy :p It was either Luis or Kenny but considering betas can live quite a while I think the fish will be here longer than suarez will be at liverpool lol so even if kenny aint around the club in couple years its still a pretty timeless name in relation :)
