My New 90g

I've been observing my fish this morning, and it seems like they are happier (I mean, who wouldnt be in a home more than twice ab big), but they actually seem to be shoaling more. In the other tank, my 1 cat fish wouldn't go near the other 2. They are a different kind, and I bought them after this one was alone for a good number of months. They are all swimming together. I still have a female platy who thinks she's a barb, but all the fish are swimming all over the place... they have so much more room.

I can't wait until my plants start taking off again, and really fill in.

Cloudiness, the annoyance of the fishkeeping. lol... When I switched from sand to gravel I caused a filter crash so now my tank is all cloudy again and you can acutally see the clouds of bacteria. hehe. It still is too.. I can't wait to have a clear tank again.

I ended up getting a power compact light instead of the flourescent, and I think I'll be happier in the long run. The bulbs are more expensive, but they last longer. I now get 2.8wpg, and I would have needed like 6 or 7 flourescent bulbs. The reflector takes up the same space as a 2 bulb flourescent fixture. And the best thing about it is it came with the bulbs on 2 circuits with 2 seperate plugs, so I can create a sunrise/sunset effect with timers so that I don't have 260 watts blasting on them in one shot.

Looking good. Seems like you've sorted out the lighting, what color temp?. Make sure you have plenty of CO2 (at least 20 mg/l) with that much light - the last thing you want is an algae bloom at this early stage. You may need some more fast-growers too to help establish a balance quickly - floating plants would work a treat, blocking out some of the harshness of the new light too.

BTW don't worry about the powerhead - more harm than good (CO2 loss).

As soon as I get the cloudiness gone, I will be taking the powerhead out.

As for the lights, It came with 2 x 10000k bulbs, and 2 6700k actnic bulbs which were replaced with 2 6500k white bulbs. I didnt see until I got home that the light says 'for saltwater and reef tanks' so I'm hoping that it will be ok. I might call the store and say that it came with the 2 10000k bulbs, but I'm using freshwater, and wasn't told the 10000k bulbs are for saltwater and see what happens. I dont really want to pay an extra hundred on 2 new bulbs.

I have been looking for some floating plants, but none of the stores around me sell any, I might go get some hygro again because that grew really fast. Any suggestions for some algae combating plants? Now that wattage isn't a concern, I have so many more options.

The cloudiness is deffinatly clearing, and it's really starting to come together. I think I'm happy with the aquascaping for the time being. I have just purchased some more plants, which should come in the next week or so.

Here it is as of today!

Edit - image reomved as I lost them from my website. doh!

Looking good canoechiq though i would recommend you change the 10000k bulbs for say 5200k as these are for marine tanks and may cause an algea bloom. Also the light may be too intense for the plants. 10000k bulbs are used for marines as the corals love the extra light

When i bought my metal halide lamp it came with a 12000K bulb and two blue fluros and when i ask i man that i bought it from he said no problem and within a week or so he had the new bulbs at no extra cost, just a stright swap

Hope this helps

I'm kitty sitting this weekend for my brother and his girlfriends cat, Charlie. He has never seen a fish tank before, and I haven't been able to tear him away from it since he got here. He isn't quite sure why he cant get at the fish inside. lol. silly kitty.

So here is charlie admiring my new tank. lol

That has to be one of the coolest and funniest pics I've seen in a while lol. Your tank is looking great. If I can ever get my tank stable maybe I can start working on mine heh. I just recently purchased some new lights that will give me a very high WPG lol. Good Luck. :D

 my cat still does it after years - it's like watching TV for him. He's constantly "tapping" the glass and just LOVES my pictus. The fish take no notice of him whatsoever though.
:kewlpics:

The tank looks lovely, and that driftwood is Awesome!! i'd definatly recommend changing those 10000K tubes though. i used one when i first set up my plants. BIG MISTAKE, 4 months later and i'm just nearly rid of the algae. within a month of putting them in i had hair algae everywhere, really dense bright green fluffy algae (thats the scientific name you know  ), green slime algae (really stinks), and a ton of spot algae on the glass.

need i say more. :p

as to floating plants try some Riccia Fluitians it'll grow fine in that light as long as you have enough CO2. it really sucks the nutrients out of the water though (which is obviously a good thing) so you'll need to fertalise.

it grows so quickly that after a few weeks you'll either have to submerge some of it on wood, make a carpet etc.. or throw it away. (my LFS will even buy it off me as they find it really hard to get hold of :hey: )

good luck with the next bit.

I second that....I really like the branchy driftwood thing you got going. Get him something to sit on at level with the tank and you have just OWNED cat sitting forever! Get it....."cat sitting"?

I kill me.  :D
