This is my latest community tank, it is 110Litres(give or take)&3footX1footX1.25foot
I have built a custom hood(yet to be painted) and fitted a new 2Ft bulb and fitting.
It has a 100W heater, 400L/H filter&60L/H air pump. All seems to be working well together.
I have set up a garden scape, of sorts, and I am fairly happy with it.
Got a few plants in atm but they're not grown in right yet, looking for java mass, hair grass, dwarf hair grass, moss balls and some Hemianthus Callitrichoides to carpet the bottom.
The fish I have in are:
4XMale Guppys
2XFemale Guppys
1XMale Betta
8XNeon Tetra
1Xblack Phantom Tetra
2XSilver Sharks(Bala Shark)
1XRed Fin Shark(Ruby Shark)
2XHoney Gouramis
2XBlue Face Rams
2XGhost Catfish
1XLeapord Angel
1XMale Anscistrus
1XLong Nose Loach
3XRamshorn snails
And a little fella I can't remember his name, he's a type of catfish, long and thin with big scales. A type of suckerfish. I will post a picture when I can:)

Anyway here's some pictures. . .

The Tank

My Betta

I will put up more pictures when I get some and make some more progress with the tank:)
Advice and opinions much appreciated

Quite a lot going on for a 110 litre don't you think

The fish I have in are:
1XMale Betta With some of the fish in there, might cause problems?
1Xblack Phantom Tetra Need to be in bigger numbers
2XSilver Sharks(Bala Shark) Will grow too big for the tank?
1XRed Fin Shark(Ruby Shark) Will grow too big for the tank?
Advice and opinions much appreciated

That's my guess with the fish you've got in the tank. Although I'm not 100% sure so maybe someone else will also post their opinion :good:

Edit: I think I see them in the pictures, look quite small at the minuet? They will out grow the tank though. I'm not sure that mix of fish are 'community' or not? Some of them I'm unsure of. But like I said I'm not 100% ;) :good:

I no it might seem that but they have all been introduced slowly over the last 4 months and no problems at all, I thought I may have problems with the betta and the guppys but they have been together for 3 months and not a single incident:)
They all get on perfectly so for the time being I think I am fine, you're deffinately right about the bala sharks growing too big for the tank(with the rest in there) but I am going to move to a 180 or bigger when I find one I like:)
Thanks for the advice:')

+1

Especially when you take into account that angel fish need a tank of at least 18 inches high, ruby sharks need at least 250 litres and shouldn't be kept with any other type of shark.

My main concern would be the silver sharks. Feel so bad for them. They need to be in groups of 6 or more. Around 10 is good. They NEED tanks of around 8 foot long, 3 foot wide and 3 foot high. More than 800 litres. They are very skittish fish that get huge if given the correct space. If kept in anything less than the need they will quickly become stunted (like any other fish). This basically means the fish will stop growing on the outside but will continue to grow on the inside causing deformity and an early and painfully death :(

Just at a quick glance I'd take back the ruby shark, the angel and the silver sharks as your tank is definitely not big enough for them.

Another thing I'd point out is that with heaters it's recommended to have 1 watt per litre of water so yours may struggle a bit but not 100% on this. You may be ok. If it was me then I'd get the next one up. 150watt or 200watt. The filter may say 400lph but that's usually with no media in it. The flow can drop dramatically when the filter is full of media so there is a gd chance that filter isn't efficient enough to cope with the waste from all those fish.

Neon tetras are very small and known to become food to a growing angel. I wouldn't be surprised if ruby shark has a few too.

But 180 is still far too small bud. Your talking 250+ easily for some of those fish :)

Research is your friend :good:

And I never knew the phantom tetras need to be in bigger numbers, I thought that but I got him from a different shop to my regular one and I was told that it would be perfectly fine to have one alone. Will have to get some friends for him this week, how many would you say? 3/4 more?

I shall try and constructively list my concerns...

  • Bala/Silver Sharks should reach ~40cm. They are skittish in small numbers, I would want to home a 10+ group in a 12x3x3 tank (read mission impossible for 99% of fishkeepers)
  • While Ruby Sharks are not quite as aggressive and Red Tail Black Sharks and reach ~15cm, I would not want to home one in anything less than a 4-foot that had a brisk (8x real water turnover per hour, so ~2000lph in my Rio240) current
  • I would not want to house a Betta with another gourami species, because I would be worried of fights to the death between them
  • I would not want to house a Betta with Guppies, because the former will often see the livebearers as enemies due to their colourful fins
  • I would not want to home an Angelfish in anything that had less than 45cm of actual water depth, an adult fish is rather deep top to bottom
  • I would not want to home Ghost Catfish (Kryptopterus bicirrhis/minor) in numbers less than 10, they are reknowned for pining away in small numbers and are rather skittish fish
  • I would want to know what the "Long Nose Loach" really is, because many common loaches are social; some can grow huge like Weather Loaches; some are predatory/territorial; some like Clown Loaches are fast water fish (like the Ruby Shark you have)
  • I would want to know what the "suckerfish catfish" was, without knowing knowing more its mouth suggests it needs a fast water setup
  • I would want to have 10+ Black Phantom Tetras, because they are reknowned for nipping in small numbers and they are a social fish.

Even if you removed the fish too big for this 100l, I feel you have far too many fish in this tank, especially once you give social fish suitable numbers. Without the Bala Sharks, I would not be comfortable housing the rest in anything less than a deep 4-foot tank, but you still than have fast water/ calm water issues.

I've never kept them but I know they are a schooling fish so you'd want a good group of them. If you search google there are many websites that give good info on all kinds of fish :).

I'm not having a go or anything but try not to walk into a fish shop and grab any fish you like the look of with out knowing anything about them. Or even asking the person in the store, as most sadly enough will give you any old rubbish to see the £££'s come out your wallet ;). So the best thing to do is research on the interweb :good:.

Any type of tetras is usually recommended to be in groups of around 6+ with the more the merrier. Your tanks not tall enough for the angel. Not long or wide enough for the ruby shark (250 litre minimum) and around 8 foot or more for a group of 6 or more silver sharks (800 litres)

Good advice as always :)

I am changing to a 4foot tnak in the next month or so, so I'll get a 4-footX2/3 foot tank.
I am going to either take the bala sharks back to the shopr re-home them and I am going to re-home the black neon tetra
I am not worried about the betta and the gouramis or guppies anymore as I have watched them for several months now and there has not been a single problem.
Once I hace rehomed them in their new tank I will introduce several new glass catfish.
Will that solve my issues?
