As far as sand goes it is cheaper to buy sand box play sand than buying sand at a pet store. Most hardware stores like Fleetfarm, Menards and Lowes carry play sand. I use it in my soft water tetra and cory tank.

Sand will not work with an under gravel filter. I have several UGF and when I changed to sand I replaced the UGF with a sponge filter.

Now knowing sand matters for corys what kind of Cory should I get?

With play sand how do I put it in the tank should I drain the tank and add the sand but not before getting a good washing?
