His fins though 😍

So far so good but theyre under close monitoring given theyve spawned. They've not gone too crazy with defending the eggs, the male is keeping most of the fish to the opposite side of the tank and its only mild chasing at best.

Ready at any point to move the cories over to my other 55g if it escalates.

Those colors are Amazing.
I hope you get a nice bunch of babies
What breed are they?

Many fish can be like that.
Sometimes it is just learning other times a night light will help.
There many theories on why if it keeps going on.
Hopefully they just learning and you know you have a confirmed pair now.
There is belief that filial cannibalism/ eating the eggs/wigglers/fry encourages stronger ,larger spawns afterwards ..

I have no clue who ate them, but I think I am going to pick up a temporary tank divider if they spawn again, this way I can just segregate that half of the tank from the tankmates in the future. Could have been mom for whatever reason, too. Who knows.

It's a bit of a bummer, but I expected failure for the first spawn from them as I've read that is usually the case for many first spawns.

It rained super heavy last night and it got the cories all going nuts from it, so that even could have disturbed it.

Cichlids sometimes freak out over something (anything) & eat their eggs to 'protect them'. There is also often a learning curve for new cichlid parents. The male is usually ready to breed again before the female & he may eat eggs to get her back into breeding mode. If they bred once, they'll do it again.

I've forgotten, what corys do you have in there? You know I love them!

Brochis splendens and hoplisoma loxozonum. 1 last eques.

I anticipate they should breed again eventually :D

Came home today to find the rock empty

She ended up moving the freshly hatched babies into the debris pile in the substrate (this is the back corner of the tank where broken down old wood, sticks, snail shells, etc go to die)

The move serves multiple purposes.
It helps hide from predators.
Possibly more important is it takes them to a cleaner spot.
My ram and apisto breeding experience showed the fish generally did not remove bad eggs like some say but moved the good ones away from the fungus issue.
Congrats~!

So she vanished. I didnt see her since last post. I suspected she moved the fry again, but I couldn't find her for the life of me.
I suspected up in the massive mass of floating bacopa monnieri.
I fed them today and saw her come flying out of the mass of roots, and then go back in. She's still in breeding dress, so I will assume she is with her fry still up there. No glimpses of any yet, but I squirt some liquefied mealworms over into the area I saw her go into for the fry.

Trying to spot fish in this dense mass is fun 💀
