Not sure if this has already been stated, but soaking filter media in tank water won't do anything. Bacteria gathers on surfaces, and can be squeezed into water, but doesn't normally develop in it.

Might I also add, those tanks normally only come with an air pump/under gravel filter? Those don't need media... Did you get another filter for it ?

well, considering that 30L of water alone would weigh 66 lbs... and then consider the added weight of the glass, lights, decor, etc... you're looking at suspending a minimum of 70 lbs from your ceiling. probably not a good choice.

consider also the fact that you'd probably also want to hang it from a single point like a lamp--which would render it almost impossible to get a water change done.

I was more thinking along the lines of a baby biorb hanging from steel cable(s) from a pulley attached to the ceiling. This would look really cool but I doubt my parents would let me do it.

there's still the question of how to secure it properly without sacrificing the aesthetic advantages of the spherical shape. a suspension system would have to either (a) connect directly to the top somehow which would obscure water access or (B) sling underneath the bottom which would obscure the view from the sides.

installing a biorb to a heavily reinforced metal wall shelf would probably achieve much of the same "weightless"/futuristic appearance without the safety concerns of a suspended system. but the best, most secure display would probably be to use a pedestal. (perhaps a steel-and-glass one?)

i gota edit that bit out discus, i read uo about it and asked my local fish shop, he said because i hade keept them in teriable water for there 4 years of life and they thrived in it (i was only 9 at that time so don't yell at me about being a bad person), anyway he said their imune systems will be less effecteed by high ammonia, nitrate and nitrite. he was amazed at how long they had lasted in a 15l with no air pump, a cheap filter where i only used the pads. thatnk you for ointing that out tho.
shang hi

PS. i dont treat my fish like that any more, they have air, full filtration light, weekly water changes of 20%, heater and there alll happy in their little biOrb home.

I like the Idea of the pedestal, but unfortunately I won't be getting one anyway. I just saw the prices.
