My lazy Red Devil? As if that was possible. My fishy, Named Vichy, or vicious, Has alway been more that active. buggy is more the description. He is about 7 in. in a 36X23 40 gallon tank with a canister filter rated for a 100 gallon tank. very clear water. ok, to the point, He has been hiding lately in stead of moving gravel or wanting me to play with him. I play with him using a magnet glass cleaner which usually he cant get enough of. He also usually dances in front of the glass when I walk through the door.. now he hides behind a plant, until I "play" and then he comes out, for a few seconds and then goes back to hidding. This is abnormal for him. I dont think its ich, because He has had it before I traded the "crap" filters for the canister. plus he does not look ill. could he be a she having some spawning issues? or is my tank too small, even with that canister+graval filter? or is he just "moody"? or do I worry to much. hmmm.. he is my best friend and I have raised him for three years. I even moved he 10 hours from cali to so. oregon in a 50 gallon trash can.. the fish is a tough little bastard.. help red devil lovers... singed... vichys master.

hi never had a red devil but i have had other large cichlids my flowerhorn was the same as you have described untill i but him in a much larger tank 100 uk gal with a jag he battered the jag and was very happy alone with just a few syno-E and a large common plec to pick on :good:

a larger tank may help just my 2 pennies mate

The tank is too small, it's not about what filters you are using, it's the dimensions, it had little room to move around.

Have you tested the water stats at all? What's your water change routine?

I also have to say its tank size. while my RD has never had that issue as he got his own 75 US gal tank when I got him my A. Festae did while he was in a 30 gallon US tank and then I moved him to a 55 US Gal tank and now he only seems to hide if I look in the tank.
