My Fishless Cycle.

ahh what would I do without you miss wiggle x, should I check 12 hours later, that would be 10 o'clock tonite? Gutted aswell because my car has broken and If my cycle has finished I cant drive to the fish shop for fish :(

yeah check 12 hrs later, don't panic though, you've got your qualification week after you first hit 0,0 at 12 hrs remember so if it is done today then it's a week before it's time to add fish.

certainly making progess if nitrite is now hitting 0, just need to get it down to the 12 hr mark now. :good:

yea Its goin down to 0,0 in about 14 hours soon be ready, but that was just 3ppm.

ok, you can ease it back up towards the 5ppm now then, just top up to 4ppm tomorrow and then when that's getting done somewhere around the same time frame as you are now put 5ppm in the next day. :good:

the last bit where you definately have a good colony of ABacs and NBacs but they just can't quite process the full 5ppm in 12 hrs is the most frustrating part. rest assured you're nearly there though. :good:

haha, I hope that its done for saturday, then I can do my qualifying week and get some fish the next saturday :)

Question -

Using the fishless Cycle we add ammonia to grow the friendly bac. that converts ammonia into Nitrite.

Once the results are good as in the ammonia conversion goes from 5ppm to 0ppm in 12 hours

We then carry on until "other" bacteria grows which then also clears/converts the Nitrate down to 0ppm in a 12 hour cycle.

My question is that if we can use ammonia to significantly grow the first bacteria do we have to wait for the "standard time" growth of the Nitrite converting bacteria or would it be possible to say add Nitrite in a given daily dose to have the same speedy effect

My mind does wander but I am intriged to find out whether this has been tried and if it was succsessful, or of course I am completely off track!!!!

can you go out and buy a bottle of nitrite?

remember than you can overdose the bacteria on nitrite and poison them and you can also cause a pH crash from too much nitrite and nitrate.

if your adding it consistently through the cycle and it's being produced by the ABacs I think it'd just do more harm than good although I can see why popping a dose in as a head start at first could kick start the NBacs growing a bit quicker.

good question!
