My Fishless Cycle.

so are you saying that once i see the drop in both ammonia and nitrite in 12 hours, give it another week before I add any fish just to make sure the the bacteria has really took hold.

Joiners/carpenter, just really build roofs, timber framed homes, and hang doors, skirtingboard etc............

yup basically, just keep popping in 5ppm of ammonia each day, if you're still getting the 0,0 after 12 hrs you're good to go :good:

Yup, agree with MW, you've stated it perfectly there!

:) sometimes I think I'd pay a pretty penny for someone who could do doors right. None of mine work worth a darn in my old house! Ha!

ha ha, Ian is having his first ever go at hanging doors in the next few weeks.... that'll be fun! However I'm confident he can't get them any worse than they are now, only one door shuts properly and stays shut in our house (thankfully it's just us two living there, could be embarassing otherwise!! ).

we could certinaly do with your skills at the moment actually, Ian doesn't get on very well with wood and we've absolutely tonnes of that sort of stuff to do coming up. Unfortunately we can't afford to pay you. But if you fancy a day away from home just give us a shout!!

haha, its easy to put a door on but I guess I have had 4 years learning at college to say that, get the right tools, take your time and everything else follows.

what readings are you stuck on and what day in your cycle is this now?

the thread days are up to date, I Update them everyday, Its the last 6 days on the thread.

ah didn't realise you were updating the first thread, sorry blonde moment!

yeah nothing to worry about at the moment, whats happening is you're putting in 5ppm of ammonia each day, this produces around 14ppm of nitrite every day. your test readings are not really 5ppm for nitrite, they are 5ppm or above. There probably is movement but the amounts are too high to measure.

two things you can do, first do a large water change which will bring nitrite down to a measurable level and you can then see some movement, second is to reduce ammonia to adding 2/3ppm per day which will reduce the amount of nitrite being produced until your NBacs catch up. Once you get to ntirite hitting 0 or there abouts after 24 hrs you can work ammonia back up to 5ppm per day over a couple of days.

so if I do a 50% water change, so I can leave my filter running, and get some experience doing a water change with the bucket and pump, as I have never done one before, and start putting only 3ppm of ammonia daily. Does that sound ok?

just done a 50 percent water change and didnt go to plan lol, tried to tip the water on my bog wood and the bottom of the tank but because my tank is only small the water still hit the subtrate and my tank turned into a mini volcano with black sand all over the place and nearly uprooted my crypts, now I have black particles all over my plant leaves lol, how can I make sure I dont do this next time?

use a hose pipe to put water in, then you have a tap and can control the flow. :good:

what If I use the pipe used to filter the water out into the bucket, I can put the fresh water in the bucket and do it the opposite way round lol, Im stupid and should have thought of doing that lol, should I test my waters again now, because I would have taken out the ammonia and would need to add it back up???? Or wait for the tank to settle?
