I just realized one of my harlequin rasboras has red spots on his sides that look like he might be bleeding from the inside. Earlier this week I noticed him not always swimming around as much but he still ate and this is the first time I have ever seen somthing visibly wrong with him. Basically its a red spot right in the middle of his body one side larger than the other, bright red in color. Is he bleeding, what should I do??

Please help

Sorry don't have a tester kit, waiting for some money and in about a week I should have one, but he has a red stripe more or less on either side of him, never gets picked on, sometimes just sits there doing nothing and other times acts fine and swims with the other. Still eats.

Septicemia and I would get your water tested fast, i would do a water change and add a bacterial med to the tank.

Red spots on skin can be caused by:
Regarding the small red dot, small pinprick like haemorrhages (called petechiae) can be due to a local lesion, a generalised septicaemia or toxaemia caused by acute viral and bacterial infections.

Well the problem is I don't have any money so I can't get any meds right now, my parents owe me about 40$ which I will get next weekend so hopefully he can live till then. Is it contagious, should I move the oto to the guppy tank and do a salt bath and raise the temperature?

Thanks

Austin

If you can't get any meds for a while, do frequent water changes, and drop the temperature towards the low end of what is tolerated by the fish. Fresh water is good for any fish, well or ill, and dropping the temp will slow the growth of the bacteria.

I doubt the fish will make it as septicemia is blood poisoning and once it has progressed it hard to cure, I would issolate the fish even if you have to put it in a container at the top of the tank, as the bacteria release from the fish into the tank.

Yes, but it won't get better without a med.

Ok but would it have a better chance of not spreading to the other fish and what type of med would you suggest?

Need a location for a med.

What country do you live in.
