My First Ever Fun Tank

Ammonia for fish less cycle ebay link in case you find it hard to buy in the shops - many people do. It must be pure ammonia with no additives. Good luck!

Nope, pure ammonia will probably kill yourself & everyone in the house, it is next to impossible to buy 100% ammonia, 9.5% solution is the one you want.

Good for you coming to this forum to learn and for choosing a fishless cycle. You will save your fish so much suffering, save yourself money buy not having them keep dying on you and save yourself a lot of very hard work by not having to do massive water changes every single day for at least 6 weeks to get the tank safe!! :good:

Pop your location up there may be a member near they can offer you some help/ammonia/mature media/abuse :p

You have a very nice looking tank there. Don't worry too much about heater orientation. It is common to place it at an angle to make the adjustment knob easy to reach while getting it to lay down some, but the way you have it will work fine too. If your tank is less than about 40cm tall, angels would not be such a good idea but I have no idea the actual measurements of your tank. It may be just fine for angels for all that I know.
Since you have your parents tanks to draw from, I would do a filter clone rather than a typical filter cycle. What I do is to get everything up and running in a new tank, then I use that tank as a cleaning bucket for one of my established filters. The end result is a bit of an eye sore but a filter with a good seeding of the right bacteria. After that I treat it more or less like a fishless cycle by dosing some ammonia each day and verify that there is no build up of ammonia or nitrites. By the end of the week I am doing a massive water change and tank cleaning so that I can go shopping for fish.

Too late boss. He's chosen for a fish-in cycle.

Terry.

That does not prevent him salting that new filter from an established one TA. I do that all the time when I get ahead of myself at a club auction. It will just require that he keep testing and doing water changes for a few days until the new filter is truly ready. Meanwhile the tank may look a bit messy while the bacteria reproduce and give him a cycled tank.

I'm with you OldMan47, I'm all for the donated media. I'm 45 years old myself & I've always been impatient. Besides, whether doing a fish in or fishless cycle the donated media can't hurt unless it's from a diseased tank. A quick check of the water stats & the health of the fish residing in the tank are as good a check as you need.

Extra testing & more water changes will be necessary but worth it in my humble opinion.

Actually I am on tap right now to send some cycled media to a member here. It will have to wait until I have time to do a filter cleaning but that is what the media donors list is all about. I will still have plenty for the tank that I will be stealing from.

My dad doesn't have a tank anymore, this was years ago, all he has now is his experience! Lol
