not started adding ammonia yet as i left the bottle down my sisters house! will be getting it tonight and will start to add some tomorrow when i get back from the girlfriends place i take it that my tank will be fine until then?

Need to be fast because the bacteria need the ammonia for food, without it they are not going to survive. I would try and get it going today to be honest.

Fish food is better than nothing, put a good amount in though.

HELLP!! PANICKING! just come back from the girlfriend house and was just about to start putting ammonia in and i have 4 gold fish in my tank!!!!!!!! mum said that my nan came round with them earlier what do i do now? first thing iv done is switch off my heater or should i set it to a lower setting

yea but i feel a bit bad as my nan got them for me lol i no they will have to come out when i get my cichlids as they are not tropical!

there coldwater fish, so if your doin a fishless cycle, with the temp set at 29c they will not survive,

or you could buy a small goldfish bowl

No, you just need to immediately rehome them back to a store or somebody with a pond. You can gush to her how wonderful it was but that they would have died right away and you liked them too much to have that happen!

They are just completely wrong for what you're doing, each goldfish needs about 30 US gallons and cold water, its just not the same thing at all as a hot bacteria growing tank that's in fishless cycle.

Well let´s think about this a moment.

I gave you a good amount of mature media which should easily cope with a couple of goldfish.

How about turning the temperature down and allowing the tank to cycle with the goldfish present. Don´t add ammonia and keep measuring the ammonia reading. I don´t think you will see much but water changes should control that.

In the mean time give some thoughts to re homing the goldfish. Maybe a second tank of the cheap variety.

I don´t think there is too much of a probem here.

but i don't want to put them in a another tank as i no ill end up keeping it in my room to! if you say i can keep them in and still cycle my tank then ill do that as that will keep my nan happy she's old and will forget about them in a week or so!! and if she remembers about them and takes a look in my tank when she's round ill just say look nan that gold fish just turned into a cichlid!! lol

If it was me i would take them out, or like WD said take them to a LFS or someones pond
