My First Ever Fishless Cycle, Please Help, With Log!

Just updated, my PH has gone up to 7.8, since adding my new fluval 205
also seeing quite abit of green algae on glass, no more brown since adjusting my light.
also loads of white little stringy things stuck to glass and floating aroung?
the things are more like fluffy spore type things like mini dandelion spores .

Today a got some mature media from a member on here, :good:
2 X tetratec EX1200 sponges, i cut both into two and put them in my fluval 205 sponge frame
i also added the water in the bag which was from his tank

they was put in a 11am today i test at 3pm but they was no change, i tested really to make sure the PH had not gone down

also iv been goin for 20+ days and my ammonia is till not changing much, i messed up at the start would this of messed the cycle up with only been about 3-4ppm off ammonia not 5ppm

As long as the bacteria has something to feed on it should be fine mate, just make sure you don't go over 5ppm!

All you really need to do is make sure that when you get towards the end of your cycle you are topping up to 5ppm, otherwise your tank probably wont be able to support the stocking plan you have.

As far as the mature media goes, don't worry about not seeing a change yet, it will happen! Trust me!

Cheers

No change in tests!
10 hours since rabbuts mature media added!
I sometimes takes a day or more to see whether a mature media addition "takes." Give it some time. Sounds like a nice big dose, which should give you maximum chances!

UPDATE

no change at all even with mature media

the member i got it off who also runs the aquatic section in a LFS and i trust him told me a handfull of things why this could of happened and suggested a full strip down!

so i did, but not the filter

taking my ship out as the paint was peeling off, just tested 25hr after the big change still no change in the 5ppm i added last night

i also added baking power too stop the ph crash, could my plants be affecting my cycle 4 amazon swords and 2 other plants

Sorry to hear of your troubles sjolliff,

You looked to be coming along ok with progress from your ammonia processors prior to the MM addition. Frustrating! I guess that's some of why this forum exists, because these startup processes are not all just a canned simple thing, they can be a bit of a black art sometimes.

rabbut has been an excellent advisor the whole time I've been here on TFF, so I'm sure the advice he gave you would have been spot on. It certainly does look to be a mystery why you were getting no signs of nitrite activity going on 30 days. I certainly wouldn't be worried about plants, the most effect they usually have is simply to lower ammonia and/or nitrate(NO3) a bit sometimes, leading to some confusion it that's not taken into account. Although plants can technically absorb a bit of nitrite(NO2), that's said to be quite rare and virtually never reported to be a practical consideration in terms of our fishless cycles and test kits.

I forget, have you ever picked up a GH/KH kit? They're quite helpful if you're thinking of using baking soda to increase your KH>pH situation.
