My Filter Sounds Like Its About To Die!

My stingray filter sounds like its on its way out, but I havent seen another like that in the shops around my area, so I was wondering, if I cant, how can I change the filter to something completely different, and still keep the good bacteria levels low?

The filter sponges in the stingray are different from other filters I have seen, so putting them into the new filter may not work...Ho can I change the filter completely and allow it to bed in easy?

Just as long as it hasn't actually died already you can buy a new filter of equal of greater filtration and place it in the tank with the current Stingray. The bacteria will transfer over to the new filter, tho it does take some time.

I'm quite suprised that you are having problems finding a replacement or spares as I thought they were extremely common... Have you tried ebay?

If you can get hold of a new one u can just switch the media over.

if you can fit the sponges into another filter even if you have to add more sponge all could be gooe,have you checked the impeller etc and cleaned at the grubby bits,is filter fully submerged?

Well, im a bit of a numpty really, ive looked around online and found some instructions for it and found that I havent put it in the water properly, most of the filters ive used need to break the water at the top, which is how I set this up, but it needs to be a minimum of 1cm below the waterline! So I called the other half and asked her to sort it

I also found out that it comes apart more than I have been doing already, so im going to strip it down tonight and clean it better, see if that helps...im hoping its just really dirty

I never got instructions with it as I bought the whole tank with accessories and the filter came with it, but now ive found instructions on how to fully take it apart, im going to try that 1st

As for getting it online, I dont have the bank card that allows me to pay online, or over the phone, so im stuck with the shops around me, and most of them deal with the Fluval makes mainly, ive not seen the stingrays, only new filters

But I will see what happens when i take it apart, and take it from there...Eventually I will find one if needed, or I will have to get a different type and do the media switching, or run both at the same time till the new one breaks in and allows the bacteria to stay the same, last thing I want is for the chemical levels to get too high and I lose all my fish

Hopefull it will be alright, but personally I dont like the stingray filters, I used to have one and one of the first things I did when I got the tank was replace it with a fluval internal (fantastic filters)

In the event you do end up having to replace it I'd definately go with either a fluval U2 or 2+ or the 3 series if the tanks slightly bigger. You can squeeze the sponge media from the stingray inbetween the media pads in a fluval 2+

Do you have a Maidenhead Aquatics near you cos i've seen Stingray Filters for sale there, along with the replacement sponges etc.

I do! I use that place for all my fish, just maybe I was being blind! lol!

I like mine, it is quiet, and the levels are so low now with it! I tried my fluval and all it was doing was making my water cloudy, changed back and the NO2 & NO3 levels have never been lower
