My Cousin Doesnt Know The First Thing About Fishkeeping

hi there my cousin is so stubborn no matter how much i try to advise him he doesnt listen and thinks im wrong and hes right.

basically he has a nitrate level of 120 and a ph of 8.5

ive told him its good to do water changes for the fish to reduce the nitrate but he wont listen and he thinks its bad for the fish! i mean seriously, he thinks theres high nitrate in tap water when the fact is he doesnt even know what nitrate is or how its produced in the fish tank.
also half on his tank has white spot and he fails to believe me when i say they have it. even though i am currently treating my own tank for white spot

he has a 190 litre tank, the basic 3 footer and here is his unbelievably wrong set up of whatr he calls a comm tank

5 shark catfish 3 of which are 6 inches long
2 fully grown angel fish
pakistan loach of 5 inches
knife fish of 8 inches
2 guppys
1 golden gourami
1 swordtail
a 4 inch clown loach
4 3 inch bn plecs
a 6 inch plec
a 3 inch plec
oh yeah and he has 2 electri yellow malawi cichlids which are territorial and aggresive once settled in.

how can i get it into his stupid head he needs to change the water. and not to mention getting rid of most his fish lol

Uhh... take the fish away, one at a time. X)))
Or at least change his water without him knowing it... or tell him to add a ton of plants to get rid of some of that nitrate.
But if they all have whitespot and it gets worse... -.- Not much you can do except sneak in some treatment for ich.

Uhh... take the fish away, one at a time. X)))
Or at least change his water without him knowing it... or tell him to add a ton of plants to get rid of some of that nitrate.
But if they all have whitespot and it gets worse... -.- Not much you can do except sneak in some treatment for ich.

ive manage to treat his tank for him. removing carbon from filters and halfing the dose because he has sharks and loaches ect.
aqnd changing his water without him knowing is quality. great idea. but ive made such a fuss if i change his water without him knowing his fish wont die and he will always say what he always says about his fish not dying. but i guess i can put up with that. thanks

Well, they're bound to die eventually (if not by ich or nitrate overload, it would be by each other's beaks).
My mom didn't want me changing my tank water daily but I still sneak water changing lol. Can't wait to get a bigger tank and not worry as much. Also test kits to know for sure when.

In what way, Im saying high nitrate may not be so bad, plus nitrate test kits are not accurate nor reliable.

Well, they're bound to die eventually (if not by ich or nitrate overload, it would be by each other's beaks).

i have all the test kits this is how i know what his nitrate levels where and his ph. his ammonia was relatively low but i expect it will rise shortly

In what way, Im saying high nitrate may not be so bad, plus nitrate test kits are not accurate nor reliable.

What about changing their water regularly without them knowing - not lying about it, but just not telling them. Some time down the line, you could tell them what you've been doing - no doubt the tank would be a lot better off for your efforts and they should notice a difference anyway.

If they have (an apropriate) computer, you could leave an apropriate thread from here on the screen for them to see and hope that they read and take note of it.
