My Channa Orientalis Have Babies!

its their treatment of the third member which made me suspicios but the tank is that untidy and cluttered for the channa that I couldn;t see anything except a hiding channa, turns out he hides away in a pit where i assume eggs are laid and thats where he stays and the babies remain when he swims out

I feed mine deshelled brine shrimp eggs, sell em on ebay for 2.50 and thats now done all my batches and still got lot left...how are they with the third one and the other tank mates?

spot on just ordered this cheers Neil

hello mate so hows the new tribe of gizmo's coming along? funny greedy things arent they, the juvi colouring would look smart on a mature specimen wouldnt it......

the juvi colouring from the little sighing I get of them is cool, like gold flash corys but on a black background

well the little critters are still going strong

I don;t want to disturb tank so it isn't having a clean or I ain't removing the odd channa out or khuli

They are growing so quick and look stunning in gold and black

The powder stuff I got on your rfecomendation Neil is going down a treat as well

anybody want some baby Orientalis when they are big enough lol

hehe glad to hear there getting on fine, yes they love that stuff, will take them up to second food, Also what i do is finely crush flake food with some dried mealworm, with one of those crusher bowls with a mini baseball bat<cant rem name
Then as they get abit big get prawns and tear/cut into very small peices, also bloodworm live or frozen works well, gets them used to all types of food from young

Pestle and Mortar I think

yeah I crushed the flake before I got that other stuff

I;ll try the mealworms as the adults a re taking them at the moment doesn;t half make them chunky

before bed last night the babies were all venturing out of their hole

going to check their still there in a minute!! fingers crpssed

Happy days 15 babies all near the surface of the tank and swimming about flanked by their parents
Got worried when one was near the front of the tank and 6 inches away from group, dad came and swallowed him up but then spat him out with others 30 secs later

Such great parents, they;re eating well and almost an inch loong I reckon

pics to follow they are grainy though as camera phone is crap

Haha looking good, yea dave said hes going to buy you a DLSR for your birthday.. :shifty:

nice one Dave few weeks to save for a good one!!

well they are a good 4 weeks plus old now , really adventurous and the 10 I have left are eating well

Does anyone know whether they eat the mucus of the parents as they still chase the parents around and appear to bite at the side, one of the adults does have blemishes on the sides

They have also started eating the bits of flake that the messy parents leave floating around

How are they doing?

Spot on Jen thanks

great to watch I thnk I have 12 or 11 they are hard to count accurately as they are all over the tank

They are a good size now eating flake and getting fat!!!

I've put them on aquarist classifieds reluctantly because as much as I;d like to keep the babies I cannot!! Hopefully they will spawn regularly now cos its a great experience
