My Armatus Payara

Possibly my favourite predator fish along with the african tiger fish.
I inherited this off a young lad who bought a fish off me and said he had a 3.5" payara that wouldnt feed. He gave it to me on proviso if I got it feeding I would pay him which I did. It fed within 2 days. Now moved in to my bigger tank along with the Forskheli Tiger fish that was in my grow out tank also

Not everyones cup of tea but these have been my favourite fish for years

Big fish with teeth that can get to 4 inches - definitely not putting my fingers in there

Btw what size is that aquarium - it looks larger then ones listed in your signature - larger then my 600 which is 10ft ?

Sorry found it 108x36x28 so 9ft x 3ft x 2'4 inches.

Wow, nice monster tank! Specially, the spotted aligator gar! Loved them but, I found them extreamly hard to feed sardin. What do you feed them? Apart from hands & fingers.

All the fish in theory should be fine in that tank for a good while yet, the african tiger is a small one the only spanner in the works being the armatus. I speak to a guy in Chicago every now and then who has three adults in an 8x 4 x 4 and they look extremely healthy in there

As this grows I have some decisions to make . Long term plan anyway is for a tropical pond but that will be at the next and last house. All kids have moved out now although somehow three are back home for a bit so we are going to downsize but one of the pre requisites will be a double garage or big out house where I can do a proper set up with connection to a drain and permanent top up and drain plus proper insulation etc. Will deffo be within 5 years but whether its in time for the armatus who knows. I know a lot of monster fish keepers in the uk with ponds so if I have to I'll have no problem rehousing but I would love to keep it

Its not an alligator gar they get far too big, banned in the UK although I would love one after seeing one in my mates pond

The 7 gar I have are all florida gars. dead easy to feed on pellet, lancefish and mussel

In sri lanka we call the florida gar "spotted gar" for many years. I'm thinking keeping exotic fish from a young age in sri lanka is a lie now, since the names are not insync.

Lovely tank and loving the fish, they all look really well in there.

There is a guy in the UK that has a massive home made aquarium - i forget the exact dimensions but it is something like 16ftx8ftx3ft - there are videos of him and his son swimming in it to manage plants. He had some massive plants in there.... enough to reach the top at 3 ft.


I found it once several years ago when i was looking at using flood lights for aquariums.
