Hi all,

I am so upset I woke up this morning to my little zebra danio on the floor all dried up  . I still can't figure out how he got out of the tank. I have a hood and all the holes in the back are covered, it is really strange. I know he liked to jump but I just don't see how he good have jump through a plastic hood. He was doing so well too, dispite being in a fish-in cycle. Well I guess my 5 gallon is being converted to a fish-less cycle a little earlier then I thought :( .

Thanks for listening.

Goes to show you how torturous a fish in cycle is. Little Mr. Danio decieded it was better to face a quick death in the and ocean of air rather than a slow and painful death in a tank full of gill burning ammonia.

Ok that is just mean. I didn't know about fish-in cycle untill after I got him. Everyone, who I thought were the experts told me to add a fish to cycle the tank. Granted I should have done more research, and I wish I had found this fourm before I listen to the people at the LFS but unfortunately I did not. He was not being tortured he was perfectly healthy. With my water changes my ammonia levels stayed at 0ppm. He was happy and healthy, it is very rude and mean of you to kick someone when they are down. I am sorry that you are so heartless that my sadness brings you joy.

I gotta agree with rebrn
Many people do fish IN cycles with no problems, yes it is better to cycle with no fish but that is no reason to be so rude to anyone! rebrn is obviously upset by the loss of fish, you could be a little bit more understanding. And this is the "new to hobby" section which obviously means new to fishkeeping and doesnt have much experience.

But to rebrn im very sorry for your loss, even a little fishy dieing is a shame esp when they are a part of your family. I hope your cycle goes ok and when you do add more fish they are fine and swim about happily. :)

Sorry to hear of your fish loss. Some fish are known for finding the smallest of holes and jumping out of a tank. I think the worst when it comes to that are probably the killies.

Thanks Floyds Mom and Oldman47. Well trying to find the silver lining I have restarted the tank with a fishless cycle so hopefully it will be ready for my Betta soon, and the 12 gallon (also fishless), hopefully will be ready for some new zebra danio soon as well. I think I may have figured out what happened. I think he jumped and got caught in the lighting cover, and when I removed the hood he must have fallen to the floor, but if that is what happened he must have been stuck on the light cover for a while...poor guy, I wish I would have anticipated that. The light cover on my hood is not completely encased and I am worried it might happen again with the betta when I get him. Is there anywhere I can buy a better lighting cover (or lighting lens), not necessarily a whole new hood. I would hate for this to happen again, I didn't realize how attached you could get to a fish untill I lost my sweet little guy.

Yeah, I somehow misplaced or lost those plastic extender strips that come with the glass lids so that you can cut out the back cover part to fit your heater, filter and other gear and had trouble locating replacements although I think I finally found them in the states. UK, where you are I think, should have lots of cover options and lots of members here to help!

Actually I am in the US. I was actually looking for the peice that covers the lighting fixture, it has an opening at one end. I have the hole in the actuall hood covered with laminated card stock, I had the card stock cut to shape then laminated. But do you remember where you located the peices, it may be better then the laminated card stock I have. Thanks

Call around and see if you can find a pet store that sells the plastic extender strips. . .One store by me sells them by the foot. It's a local mom & pop, not petco/petsmart. FWIW, I'm in the states, so seems those are available here.

JMatthew - Oooh, I LOVE it. You posted about setting up a 'tank' that is only 1 - 1.5 gallons for a fish. You're one to talk. Have fun KILLING your fish off!

Rebrn - I'm sorry about your fish. As I said, if you call around, you should be able to find more extender pieces. If not, e-mail me and I can pick up a strip for you.

It really irritates me when people take this attitude (and one of the reasons I don't post more often). Fish in cycles aren't the easiest way to cycle a tank but they are perfectly feasable, given the right approach. To emotionally attack someone and attach a complex human emotion to a fish that seems to have merely found it's way out of a tank that wasn't hermetically sealed (and who's is?!), is just plain cruel and unfair.

...

Rant over.

So many fish shops are totally irresponsible in not giving any or incorrect information to beginners - I think there should be a law about it. I think they should be made to give everyone purchasing fish a standard printed leaflet on starting up a fish tank and general tank maintance. Granted not everyone will read it, but a lot would and it would save a lot of suffering . I also think they should be made to display a printed general information and care card on each tank of species, - that way people would know how big they grew, if the were a community fish, what to feed etc before they buy.

I know some people wouldnt take any notice of these things, but the majority of people who buy fish do not want them to suffer - its just lack of information, and not everyone has access to the iternet. If it makes just a few fishes lives better then it would be well worth it.

As a beginner I agree. I really wish I had the informaton I found on this web site before I started, and thus both my tanks are now fishless cycles.

I second that rebrn. I had no idea about cycles when I set up my tank, I was just told that leaving the water in the tank for a week before adding fish was advisable.
