I thought the Balas only grow to a max of 12" if that is the case, how will it outgrow the tank

You need to remember that is you have a decent group (4+) that it would be 48" of large fish in the tank , which is a pretty heavy bioload. Also the Balas are fast moving active fish that need plenty of swimming space, which only larger tanks can give them.

You hit the nail on the head there, I and I'm sure most other people did. I bought Balas when I got my first tank about 6 years ago... a massive 15G.
